A WEST Vancouver man is among the gold-niedal winners
of the 1987 British Columbia Science and Engineering

Awards.

Roy Nodwell, emeritus professor
of physics and former head of the
physics department at UBC, won
honor for his contributions to
technology transfer, the process of
commercializing certain areas of
university research.

Nodwell has gained recognition
for pioneering research in laser
light scattering and light mixing.
The plasma physics team,
assembled by Nodwell within the
university’s physics department,
has over the years made significant
contributions to new knowledge
and has transferred the new tech-
nology from the laboratory to the
marketplace.

couver markets the world’s
brightest artificial light source, the

cially-successful technology deriv-
ed from research undertaken by
Nodwell's physics group is the
light pipe, manufactured by TIER
Systems Ltd. in Burnaby.

Nodwell is chairman of the
boards of both companies.

THE FIRST two Newtsuits
manufactured by North Van-
couver-based International Hard
Suits Inc. have been sold to Can-
Dive Services Ltd. of North Van-
couver.

Can-Dive will use the suits in its
marine salvage operations and
underwater construction projects.

The sale of $500,000 worth of
deep diving apparatus to the com-
pany is the first step in Interna-
tional Hard Suits’ bid to assemble
$4.5 million in orders by the close
of 1988.

Development Minister Grace Mc-
Carthy recently proclaimed.

The British Columbia Enterprise
Centre handled a flood of 29,000
business inquiries during its first
three months alone of full opera-
tion, A majority of inquiries were
for advice on how to start new
businesses, McCarthy said.

“*l am particularly pleased to see
that 40 per cent of inquiries are
from outside the Lower
Mainland,"’ the minister said. ‘‘]
anticipate a further increase in this
percentage of outside inquiries
when econemic development cen-
tres are established in the new
development regions throughout
our province.’’
