NV man fined for fraud A NORTH VANCOUVER man was fined $1,050 Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of making false statements on unemployment insurance claim forms. Douglas Queen faced the charges in connection with false claims that were made from March 9 to May 18. In the claims, Queen falsely stated that he did not work during that period. Sentence was passed by North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.K. Shaw. t Stolen [.D. causes error ONE. The Burnaby man’s car had been stolen and his identification used. -Shopilifter on probation A 40-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was given a suspended - sentence and placed on probation for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to a pair of theft charges. Wayne Gerard Baker appeared tn North Vancouver provincial court Thursday charged with one count of theft under $1,000 in connection with an Aug. 15 theft of some shoes from the Capilano Mali Woolco Department store. Baker faced an additional theft charge following the July 30 theft cf merchandise from the Lonsdale Avenue London Drugs store. ; Police seek violent rapist A RAPIST, who threatens his victims with a knife, hus made numerous attacks on Lower Mainland women. Police said 14 attacks have occurred from September, 1985 to July 31 this year, and they believe the same man is responsible. Police said they have been able to pattern the man’s style. They said he picks victims whose apartments can be entered by the bot- tom floor and threatens the women with a knife. On one occasion, the victim received 2 cut to the throat. Police said the suspect's face is conccaled partially by a han- dkerchief and a towel is thrown over the victim’s face. Following the assault, police said, the man robs his victim of any available cash. The rapist is described ss a white male, late 20s (o mid-30s, short, slim-build, light to dark brown hair, cut in a short style. He has large, roundish, dark eyes. Van municipal candidates meeting slated WEST VANCOUVER Citizens for Good Government will be holding a municipal all-candidates meeting Oct. 21. Spokesman Jean Lawrence said all candidates for the upcoming municipal election have been in- vited to participate in the public forum, but she could not confirm which candidates would attend. The meeting will be held at Irwin Park School, starting at 7:30 p.m. Lawrence said one of the main purposes of the 150-member strong WVCGG group is to educate West Vancouver citizens on the impor- tance of municipal elections. She said main goals of the group are to seek out and support the best possible candidate for public office; and to ensure West Van- couver’s municipal government is responsive to the needs of the local community. “We're not anti-anything,’’ she said, ‘‘We’re pro-government.”’ WVCGG will meet Oct. 29, and at that time, Lawrence said, the group will endorse a slate of can- didates.
