City compromises on zoning

NORTH Vancouver City Council compromised
Monday by allowing a manufacturing firm to have
a retail outlet in the new light-industrial zoned lower

First Street.

Council gave second and
third readings to the
amendment allowing a 20
per cent retai! outler for
Central Auto Parts, which
will be locating its business
in the 800 block West First
Street in a joint venture with
Brian O'Sullivan.

Due to council considering
a rezoning of the area be-
tween Bewicke and Hanes
Avenues earlier this year, the
city delayed issuing

ed would be more conducive
to putting the Low Level
Road through to Lower First
Street, a provincial project
suill up in the air.

Commenting on making
concessions to one business,
Ald. Stella Jo Dean said,
“Normally 1 would be
against this, but I'm going to
vate for it and hopefully ata
later date people coming into
the area will be allowed 20
per cent retail too.”"

Said Ald. Rod Clark:
“It's a compromise. Poor
old Mr. O'Sullivan has been
caught in the vagaries of red
tape at City Hall. We had to

move to save the Low Level
Roud. We've secured the
bow Level Road access.
We've made a small ac-
commodation.""

But Ald. Dana Taylor was
against making any com-
promises, stating that if the
city allows a retail outlet for
one business, then other
businesses will request the
same concessions,

Ald. Ralph Hall said he
also wasn't in the habit of
making concessions, but was
willing to ‘hold my nose’
under the circumstances, and
vote in favor of the retail
outlet.
