Needy not served

Dear Editor:

The leaders of all three ma-
jor political pazties have
again demonstrated to us, in
their unanimous glamour for
the universality of social ser-
vices, that the last thing on
their minds is the needs of
those who really need help.

Universality is, in reality, a
cynical attempt to again bribe
us With our own money, serv-
ing the dual purpose of
reducing the amount
available to the needy, whilst
inflating the overall expen-
diture figures, and at the
same time ensuring that the
balance will be recouped
from recipients who did not

need it in the first place.
The real beneficiaries, the
army of bureaucrats who
have a self-interest stake in
making the whole system as
complex as possible, which
they do with the determina-
tion of a true vocation, area
mere by-product. Could it be
that only in Canada would a
politician show such callous
and arrogant disregard for
his impoverished constituents
by calling for the payment of
welfare benefits to all
regardless of income, know-
ing full well that the cost of
those benefits will be borne
by each and every one of us.
It would appear that Liber-
tarians are the only ones who

really care about the plight of
the poor. Politicians who are
more interested in the institu-
tionalized transfer of wealth
will eventually stifle any in-
centive to succeed and make
paupers of us all. Whether we
like it or not, each of us is our
brother’s keeper, and our at-
tempts to put this respon-
sibility into the hands of self-
appointed professionals is
costing us dearly, and will
cost us much more if we do
not let our elected represen-
tatives see that we are not go-
ing to be bought with our
own money any more.
