Business education
emphasis changing

AMONG THE more than 350 courses to be offered
by North Shore Continuing Education are a
number of new courses on Business Management.

Within the next five years
40 per cent of the people
working in the Lower
Mainland will be wanfing to
upgrade their business
management skills, according
to a study on business and
education completed for the
Ministry of Education this
summer. That means 250,000
people will be entering some
kind of educational institu-
tion in the near future. The
study also concluded the
education system isn’t
meeting the needs of the
business community for rele-
vant training.

To satisfy the increasing
demand for good business
education a new approach to
management training is being
tested through North Shore
Continuing Education this
fall.

‘‘We didn't feel the pro-
grams we were offering were
adequately mecting the needs
of our students,’’ explains
Dr. Doug Ledgerwood,

director of North Shore Con-
tinuing Education. ‘‘There’s
a real shift to the en-
trepreneur in the marketplace
and most of our courses were
oriented to people working
for larger corporations.’’
Small business is the fastest
growing sector of the B.C.
economy. It accounts for 95
per cent of the companies in
the province and about 40 per
cent of the workforce. More
and more entrepreneurs are
recognizing the importance
of business training, while
larger companies have ac-
cepted the benefits of educa-
tion for quite some time.
Poor management skills are
blamed for 85 per cent of all

business fatlures, large and
small.
The new program

of people who work for
themselves from those who
work for a large company.

program is cut down from
the usual 10 weeks into in-
dividual steps that only take
three to four weeks. Step 1
measures the clients’ aptitude
and skills for en-
trepreneurism. A client can
follow all the steps or just
register for ones that fit his
experience.

found a change in attitude of
larger business towards staff
