C3-Wednesday, October 15, 1980 - North Shore News « women hat everyone should - know about basic hair care By SALLY ROWE In this year of 1980, society is very aware of pre- serving the body and doing all those things which make one live longer. This is certainly a great step for- ward and in this article we are going to be dealing with something which enhances the body - namely “hair.” While working in a salon, one meets a wide croass-sec- tion of customers, and it’s quite surprising how little the average person knows about a very important part of their make-up. With perms, colours, and high- lighting playing a large part in the hair world, we should all understand a litue about basic hair care. Hair is chiefly composed of a protein called keratin, also known as an_ acid. Although chemistry was something that most of us took in school, we should realize that hair can be easily abused by using products that we are told are wonder- ful for our hair. If hair ts an acid, 1t should be cleaned by an acid-balanced shampoo. These shampoos should have a number of either 4.5 of 5.5 (which is their PH factor) written on the bottle. If a shampoo falls into this PH category, one 1s ony removing dirt when shampooing Unfortunately many products on the market are very high in alkaline content, and there- fore do much more damage by removing natura! oils and | Lend a hand... to clean our land Bring a friend and get ? facials for the pnce of 1 Book Now! Once hair is shampooed, one has to consider motsturi- sers or conditioners. Most people know that to keep one’s skin looking healthy, one has to use a moisturiser. The same applies for hair, as it is exposed to as many or more drying elements as one’s skin. Kveryone’s hair is different, some _ staying healthier than others, some suffering far more. A normal head of non-chamically treated hair would probably Need a moisturising con- ditioner once a week. This treatment would just keep the hair healthy against everyday elements, te. wind and sun. When hair is chemically treated with perms or colours, we are removing protein and moisture. A permanent wave can be very drying to the hair, but one should always remember that if hair is taken care of, it should look as healthy as it does when one leaves the salon. This article can only touch on what we snould all know about basic hair care. When it comes to discussing dif- ferent products and finding the best to use for your hair, consult your stylist, for he or she is in the position to advise accordingly. The next time you visit your hair salon, ask your stylist what your hair requires in shampoos and conditioners — find out how to use them and see the difference for yourself Youll be grateful you asked! 980-9419 HEALTHY HAIR is the key to any good hair style.
