Statemént of intentions, ‘North ‘Vancouver City council is not yet willing. to go. . . Emerald Park Lodge, at _-350 East 2nd Street, was jbuilt’-in 1907 and was ' described by Alderman Gary Payne Monday as “possibly - the finest single family home ‘built in the City of North “Vancouver.” Since the early 1970's City councils have wrestled with the question of how to preserve or renovate the building. This year council received a $160,000 Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) grant to renovate building, and in August a tender call was put out to lease the Lodge to a non-profit agency. RCMP in North Van- couver are investigating two fires in locker rooms of local apartments which were deliberately set by arsonists. Whoever started the fire in the apartment block at 315 East ist Street late Saturday night did not even have to force open the door to the locker room as the lock had still not been repaired from the time firefighters had kicked in the door to reach the previous wo IN ONE WEEK investigate er room arsons . It was revealed Monday that the only offer to lease was unsatisfactory, and it rejected by council. Council members were then faced with a decision on whether to use the $160,000 NIP grant, acceptance of which would place various restrictions on the use of the building could be put. The deadline for : allocating NIP funds is the end of October, and council decided to request the four months. extension on this ‘time, in order to decide what to do. In the meantime, the City will approach the provincial government to see if they will aid in restoring the building. Suggestions from council members on ways to preseve the building ranged from selling it to a private company who would renovate the exterior and turn into a restaurant, to keeping the building in City arson fire there a few weeks earlier. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, North Vancouver City firefighters wearing breathing apparatus spent more than three hours clearing smoke from the locker room and the entire basement area. Two lockers and their contents were completely destroyed and a mattress in a third one was extensively burned, which was largely hands and renovating both the interior and exterior to its “pristine” form. “I think what wevre looking for primarily is to preserve our history at minimal cost,” Alderman Gary Payne said. Council’s move to preserve this site came the same evening as_ they doomed any last ditch efforts to save another heritage site - Stoker farm. Appearing as a delegation before council, the North Vancouver Communtiy Arts Council delivered a petition with 1,400 signatures in favour of preserving the Stoker .property at 29th Street and Lonsdale Avenue. In addition, Ella Parkinson, director of the arts council appealed to City council to reexamine the North Van District proposal to purchase the site as parkland. Alderman Gary Payne and Stella Jo Dean were in favour of meeting with the District before Friday in a responsible for the smoke problem. A similar fire had oc- curred last Thursday af- ternoon in another apart- ment complex, at 170 West 4th Street, where arson was also suspected to be the cause. Four lockers were damaged and there was intense smoke in the locker room and smoke damage to the hallway. Firemen found the locker door unlocked when they attended the fire.
