¢ 014-Sunday News, Avge 7, 1980 . f Friendly New York. One hotel employee summed it up when he said, “There are more lonely people in New York than anywhere else in the world. They are suspicious of each other but trust tourists.” It’s true. When we decided to visit New York, our main object was to see as many Broadway plays as we could in eight days. Since the TV reporting of the “Tony” awards, we couldn’t wait to see the plays that had ap- peared in exerpts so we planned every day around at least one! CAMELOT Richard Burton admitted that he was too young to play the role of King Arthur in the first performance many years ago. Today, he is just right and gives a magnificent interpretation of the role. The sets and costumes are classy and the well-known score needs no comment. THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS No dull moments plague this play. Go for an evening of fun - raunchy jokes, some purple dialogue and a lot of catchy songs. (46th St. Theatre) PETER PAN I felt hke an imposter at this play. Reason? No kids with me! Sandy Duncan is terrific and is backed up by a good cast. Still, it wasn’t the type of entertainment I enjoyed simply because ['m — too darn old to believe in fairies without a couple of kids to re-enforce the thrill of seeing Peter, Wendy and Co. fly. Dozens of chauffeur driven limosines waited outside the theatre for their cargo of pampered kids. Souvenir sellers made a fortune in programs and T- shirts. At intermission, (two of them) the audience milled around - oddly enough, the best dressed audience at- tending any play we saw. ‘Lunt-Fontanne Theatre - 46th St.) EVITA “When you want to buy tickets for the next per- formance as you're walking out of the theatre. you've seen a hit.” Some pcopic hate Evita. They must be nuts. IUs a great rock opera with incomparable stars and meticulous staging Give it | | Join us enjoy “Portugal II’"!! | Our escorted 2 week tour leaves for \ sunny lowcost Portugal | on the 13th of October i 41259 includes flight, accommodation tours ; and escort service from Vancouver For full details call Park Royal - North Mall 922-4131 Broadway beckons visitors your first attention when you reach New York. As we stood im line,. clutching our $24 tickets, we were offered $100 to part with them by people waiting for cancellations. (Broadway by Barbara McCreadie Theatre - Boradway at 53rd St.) SUGAR BABIES Of all the plays we saw, this one was the tops on my MUST SEE list. After spending nearly $50 for two” tickets, we figure we wasted our money. If you can live through a deadly dull first act, improved by the last number (a minstrel show), the second act may wake up. The dancers are sloppy. the sets early high school and the costumes dreadful. Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney do one _ neat sequence (the one you saw on the Tony Awards) but it doesn't help a boring overall effort. Skip it. WEST SIDE STORY A revival of the onginal - well done. All the choreography and séts are the same as the first time around. Mana 1s lovely despite the biggest feet Ive ever seen on a dancer - and has a voice you'll love to hear. “Tony” isn't as hand- some as he otta be and his tenor is clear but light. Mom wasn't impressed but I liked it. (Minskoff Theatre, 45th St.) ‘CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD We didn't get to see the star, Phillis Frelich, but her understudy was magnificent. This play, about a profoundly deaf and non- speaking woman attempting to cope with the hearing world - and a hearing husband - is a beautiful love story. It's done with class and John Rubenstein as the husband is so good that he deserves every award he's won. (Long Acre Theatre, W. 48th St.) If you're looking for tickets for Broadway shows, the box offices open at 10:00 a.m. Forget cheap seats. At Lincoln Center (Camelot) they were selling standing room for $6 but the play is three hours so unless you've got the stamina of a mule, you'll not need these. We got “restricted view” tickets for $24 apiece which meant that we were seated off to the side. If you've got no alternative, take them - but insist on “Rail” seats - meaning that they are along the edge overlooking the stage and you can lean over. They are the even numbered tickets so you don’t get to sit with your companion. Should you wani tickets for the next day, 5:00 p.m. or thereabouts is a good time to shop. The agencies return unsold tickets about this time and you might get lucky. There 1s a half-pnce ticket center on Broadway, called T.K.T.S. which opens at 3:00 p.m. but to get any choice at all you should be there, lined up, at 1:00 p.m. Most tourists just don’t have the time to waste ‘Y’ goes wilderness During the months of August and September, the North Shore Family Y.M.C.A. will be running additiona]) adult wilderness trips to both the West Coast Trail and Bowren Lakes. Weekends cost the If you plan to see several plays, choose your favorite first and get any tickets you can. Then, by process of elimination, add to your list. Native New Yorkers were amazed that we were able to get tickets to seven shows in one week but we did it by blitzing the ticket offices all in one day - working down the list. The theatres, except for Lincoln Center, are grouped between 5ist. St. and 42nd. St. and bounded by 8th block over. Cabs aren’t easy to find after a play so it’s wise to Stay at a hotel in the vicinity. I wouldn't recommend the Howard Johnson~ even though the room was large, cool and quiet. Towels were at a premium - you were lucky to get a washcloth, ashtrays were non-existant and the _ restaurant is marginal. Next time I'll try the Picadilly on 45th St. and 8th Ave. for about the same price ($70 range). At intermissions, drinks were sold in_ strategic locations around the theatre. The only place with decent prices is the Lincoln Center (Camelot) where it will cost $2.75. I bought a glass of marginal white wine at the Longacre (Children of a Lesser God) and had to pay $2.50. Have a glass of water instead! Don't worry about your wardrobe - anything goes. passport photos while you wait. ~ North Shore Darkroom 1527 Lonsdale 988-9813 From cocktail dresses to jeans and T-shirts, the audiences wore anything they fancied. I wore white slacks and a blouse to nearly everything and met myself coming and going. Men wore everything from T- shirts to business suits but the suits were in a definite minority.
