LA.M.A.T. (International
Association for ‘Medical
Assistance to Travellers)

I've written about this
non-profit
medical —

marvellous,
association of
doctors at length many times
before. The group is world-
wide and was formed to keep
all of us ignorant travellers
alive and well. Nice of them,
eh? ;

The current scare is
MALARIA. Oh, yes. I know
that Canadians don't get this
disease — or do we? If we
should be so unlucky as to
contract malaria, one quick
trip to our family doctor will
put everything right — or
will it?

The fact that frightened
me was that I'd visited many
of the places where malaria
was rampant and NEVER
realized it! Worse, ['d never
taken any medication to
prevent the disease. As a
mother, I shudder to think
that I hauled my un-
protected children with me
— to places like Africa and
Brazil. Migawd! ;

On the list I received
yesterday {over 200 coun-
tries) —
deemed malaria-free. A

Central America, half of
South America, a huge

chunk of Africa, the middle
and far east and even parts
of the Caribbean islands and

Mexico are included in. the ~

danger area.

1A.M.A.T. recommends
that everyone visiting any
area where there is the least
possibility of infection get
appropriate medication from
their doctor and begin taking
it two weeks before they
plan to leave. Although the
medication is effective
immediately, the two-week
advance helps you get into
the habit of taking the
tablets at a specific time
{once a week) and adjust to
any side-effects that may
occur such as nausea and
dysentery.

get forms of malaria but not
the same as ours. Don't
shrug that off with the idea,
“Don’t worry about that little
lady — she’s only carrying
Baboon Malaria!”
