(Ellsworth Dickson photo) " Residents defend waterfront, By AMANDA KING Waterfront development and tree-cutting were the primary concerns of some 190 West residents Monday night at the second public hearing on the municipality’s draft community plan. Some 20 members of the audience in West Van Secondary School took it in turns to voice their opinions on a number of proposals in the draft plan, with the future of the waterfront receiving the most attention. Bette Williams said the Ambleside Waterfront Ratepayers’ Association was “opposed to any commercial development.” Vancoaver, land acquisition policy (for properties between 14th and 18th Streets) is not fair to the citizens who were told it would be dedicated to parkland,” she declared. The association didn’t want to see more “highrises which have turned Am- bleside from a seaside village to a city”. And, she added, | the group is opposed to a proposed hotel and lounge at the former works yard on the Capilano River. “We find complaints of traffic at Marine Drive and Taylor Drive hard to believe if that sort of development is being proposed,” Mrs. Williams charged. Derrick Hawkins of the 14th St. should be “specifically water- oriented”. “Industry or extensive commercial should be out,” he said. Several residents criticized ‘a proposed mandatory tree-cutting by- law. “We need a tree by-law not to cut trees down because they’re interfering with somcone’s view, but to protect them,” said Arthur Mudry: of the West Van. branch of the Society for Pollution and En- Although eight garbage containers were destroyed, frees vironmental Control (SPEC). . “Our trees are our most priceless public asset.
