About time. Expanded program | encouraged Expanded programs * -to encourage amateur sport and recreation ‘development in British Columbia were = an- nounced recently by” Hugh Curtis, provincial _ secretary and minister of government § ser- -vices, following an~™ eight month study. Curtis announced in- creased financial assistance to sport governing bodies, expansion of the province’s sport development co- ordinator program, funding for fitness festivals and for fun runs in many com- munities. | Total value of the sport and fitness package is $2,153,073. ~ The sport and fitness study found that British Columbia ‘has the highest participation rate in Canada, but that represéntation on national amateur teams has declined steadily. More than 500,000 people “ participate directly in some 25,000 organized teams and leagues in the province, supported by 30-million hours of volunteer work. Program contributions to 46 sport and recreation governing bodies will be increased from $1.437- million to $1.575-million. These grants provide sup- port for administration costs and leadership development. The grants will enable expansion of the ad- ministrative centre for amateur sport and recreation in Vancouver, permitting an additional 15 sport — governing organizations to move into the building, bringing the total to 40. Expansion of the provincial sports ‘ development co-ordinator program to 12 sports means that highly qualified in- - ‘dividuals will be assigned to work in field hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse, rugby, swimming and skiing. The program already provides -development co-ordinators for baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, track and field, and volleyball. The program will cost $480,000. Curtis said, ‘‘The development co-ordinator program is directed at working with communities - and schools to build up grass _ roots participation and at improving our overall performance in -_provincial and national competitions in key sports.” The provincial initiative in fitness development will sce 28 communities hosting fitness festivals with provincial funding of $72,500. Object of the festivals is mass _ par- ticipation directed at mobilizing " entire com- munities to take part in a wide range of fitness ac- tivities. A pilot program last year in seven communities was highly successful and encouraged the government in this year’s expansion. Fun runs, a new program for the government, also encourage mass. par- ticipation with activities limited to runs, walks, cross- country ski events or bicycling. The budget will be $29,000, with grants up to $200 available to organizers. Curtis noted that $2- million has been transferred from the lottery fund to augment the $1.5-million in interest earned by the B.C. amateur sports and physical fitness fund in order to cover the cost of sport and fitness programs. About $1-million in new programs will be introduced this year. “Today's announcement is a major initiative in the sport and fitness fields, and I am confident all British Columbians will welcome this creative use of lottery profits,” Curtis said.
