The band has successfully made it through 60 years of outstanding performances in the community and around the world. Since its beginning in 1939, the youth band has wen countless awards and prizes. These include the Best Canadian Band in 1968, the Direciors Award from the 1995 Victoria Day parade and Best Canadian Band in the 1998 Victoria Day parade. in 1995, the band was honoured by becoming the official band of the City and District of North Vancouver. The youth band is not well known across the Lower Mainland even though it is a part of history. The band has delighted people all over the world with its musical ability. The year 1960 saw the band playisg in the Grey Cup parade and the PNE parade, which orought the band another first-place tro- hy. In 1973, the yousi and was chosen to repre - sent Canada in the International Folklore Festival in Northern England. The band played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the opening of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Amazon Gallery in 1983. To the students, the band is more than just an after- school activity, it is an opportunity to have fun, meet new people, be around people in different age groups {elementary to col- lege), and play with people — who are at different ability levels. It is also a chance to travel and to go to informal events arranged by the stu- dent council. rom our own experi- ence, band lias taught us to interpret music in a different way. We have made friends we will never lose and have seen exciting new places. Youth Band is an experience we will never forget.
