jet Gur War dead Dear Editor: Twas very pleased to sce the item in the Oct. 20 News which made liberal reference to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Bominion President Chuck Murphy's release on the Two Minute Wave of Silence being requested from all citizens and businesses for 13 a.m. on Nov. 11 this year. We sincerely hope that this will prave to be the catalyst that initiates the re-establishment of this tradition. It is far too easy to forget about the cost of the peace that was won on the backs of the many Canadians who died and were wounded in war these many years after the last war in which Canada was directly involved. We also seem to too often forget about our peacekeepers in the modern era, their deaths, injuries and trauma induced by their often defenceless participation in war zones at the behest of their country. We ask that all thinking Canadians support this initiative in the name of peace and hope for the new millennium. [also ask that Veterans Affairs Canada be publicly acknowlt- edged for their excellent financial and moral support of this Legion initiative across Canada. * Brian Coidweils Immediate Past President Pacific Command of The Royal Canadian Legion . During a discussion on the merits of direct democracy in Switzerland, the Gbservation was made that in this most demo- cratic of governments, Women were not given the right to vote until 197). Councillor Crist’s response was to say that if women in Switzerland had ever wanted the vote, they would have asked for it a long time ago. I was both shocked and outraged that this short-sighted and out-dated approach to women’s and minority rights should be represented on our council. Councillor Crist’s comments received a resounding backlash from the audience. Unfortunately, there were probably less than 100 people present to witness his response. Fortunately, it was videotaped.
