That was an argument Crown lawyer Greg Weber made on Monday to justify his request that Vincent Anthony Ng be sentenced to close to eight years in jail. Weber said two years in jail were needed for the former North Vancouver man to complete a sex offender treatment program, should he wish to take it. B.C. Supreme Court Mr. Justice Bruce Cohen adjourned sentencing. until March after Ng changed his mind during the court proceedings and agreed to participate in a psychi- atric assessment. The assessment was asked for by Crown in June last year, but Ng deciined then to participate. Ng, 32, pleaded guilty last May to the aggravated sexual assault of a female “friend” in Lower Lonsdale. The attack began in Ng’s vehicle and ended in Ng's Vancouver residence. “She was extraordinarily lucky to survive. (The doctor notes thar) death | could have occurred at any time,” said Weber. Ng sat in the accused box and looked straight ahead during the court proceedings. A sheriff sat beside the muscular, short man who had his dark hair shaved. Ng wore a white shirt and tan pants. The prosecuting Crown lawyer said Ng had an unresolved and unrecognized psychological problem. “This accused remains extremely dangeraus to socicty,” said Weber. The Crown attorney and Ng’s lawyer, Patricia Connor, spent months on an agreed statement of fact in the case. The Jawyers agreed thar Ng’s senrence should range from five to cight years in jail. The agreed statement of fact was not read out in open court. It was given to the judge and entered as a court exhibit. In 1988 Ng grabbed a Hastings Street prostitute by the throat and dragged her into an allcy. “He ran away because other peo- ple took note of it,” said Weber. The prostitute did not know Ng. The force of the attack left “signifi- cant markings” on the woman, said Weber. In 1990, a young woman, described as a friend of the accused, was sitting in his car. The two were having a casual conversation when Ng suddenly reached past her, locked the door and sped off. The woman was so frightened that she jumped out of the car. “He continued to drive as she tumbled on to the pavement,” said Weber. Ng explained the incident by say- ing “she freaked out,” said Weber. In 1991, Ng sexually molested two young girls. He was convicted of sexual assault.
