Sept. 4 to 30. URREALISM WAS perhaps the most ; flamboyant of the art movements generated be- tween the world wars. Born out of the anarchism cf the Dadaist esthetic and nurtured on the disturbing revelations invoked : by the advances of Freudian psychology, it was, along with De Stijl and the short-lived Soviet Constructivist movement, one of the most influential forces in iiberating Western art from the straitjacket of naturalism. By giving priority to the iconography of the subconscious rather than the prasinatism of the “rational” mind, it anticipated the elimination of tangible reality altogether as a prerequisite con- tent in Western art. Surrealism was thus partly ~ responsible for precipitating the advent of Abstractionism, the ~ post-war American phenomenon that would eventually come to supplant it. roof of the perseverance of the SWITZERLAND TRAVELOGUE FILM Narrated five in person by Joe and Mary Liz Adair NORTH VAN. Noteworthy is the surrealist spin given to the Shadbolt retrospective covered in this column Aug. 19 and the Surrey Art Gallery’s Women & Surrealism exhibit to be reviewed here next week. Even the Laniey Museum and Exhibition Centre fas gotten into the act by mounting an exhibit of prints by Salvasior Dali — an event many will look upon with some trepidation given the promiscuous nature of Dali’s signature in his final years. Perhaps the most illuminating offering in Vancouver is that em- - bodied in the cinematic docu- ments which the surrealists themselves produced during the movernent'’s first decade. : To commemorate its 20th anni- versary, Pacific Cinematheque has programmed a month-long cele- bration of surrealist cinema gravitating about and culminating in La Gala, the fundraising Sur- realist Ball held at the Vancouver Art Gaflery recently in support of Cinematheque'’s library and ar- chives.
