'f you're among this group, you will need to know a bit about ICBC - the auto insurance com- pany that will provide you with the basic coverages you must have in order to get a vehicle licensed and on the road. ICBC’s insurance is called **Autopian,’’ and is available from over 900 private, indepen- dent insurance brokers across B.C. In addition, there are also *‘no-fault’’ accident benefits for anyone involved in an acci- dent, no matter who was at fault. These benefits include up to $150,000 in medical and rehabilitation costs and up to $300 a week ¢o replace lost earnings for people employed at the time af the accident. There are many additional coverages which you can buy from ICBC or from any private insurer willing to sell them to you. Chief among these is increased third party lability coverage — most people in B.C. carry at least $1 million. Over 80% of B.C. motorists purchase [CBC's Underinsured Motorist. Protection, which pro- tecls them up to their own third party limit) in) case a motorist causing an accident doesn't carry enough coverage to pay for their claims. Comprehensive insurance is a popular optional coverage which pays for broken windshields, fire or vandalism damage or the theft of all or part of your vehicle. Another option is collision coverage for the cost of damage you cause to your own vehicle. You must pay a portion of each collision or comprehensive claim yourself. This portion is called a deductible’ and your premium depends on the size of deductible you choose. There are many other optional insurance coverages which we will review in future columns.
