JOY TELLS ALi YOU CAN’T help noticing West Vancouver businesswoman Martha Brueckel, whetlier at business meetings, cacktail parties or sacial gatherings. She is the epitome of tailored A lawsuit, | understand, will no doubt be pending. And it’s not even April [!... een The Who's Who of business and industry joined Lt. Gov, David Lam and Mrs. Lam, several politicos and dinner chairman Geoffrey Lau at last week's gala annual Dragon Boat Festival din- ner and auction. West Van's handsome Bob and Lilly Lee were there, as were the Asia Pacific Foundation’s Graeme McDonald, who now has offices across the country; several consuis general including West Van's bearded Hon. Consul to Thailand, Horst Koehler and his wife; the presidem of Cathay International TV, Lucy Roschat, glamorous re- altors Andvea Eny and Corrine Zejac, impressario David Lui; the creative Sam Carter, who bears an amazing likeness to Vancouver Ci- ty Ald. Willie and Martha were among a packed roomful of guests at the government’s reception last week in the Pan Pacific's Centreboard Club for the captain and officers of the Spanish Navy's training ship, Juan Sebastien de Elcano, along with their close friend, Frank Bernard. Martha was too modest to tell me, but a little bird whispered in my ear that the following evening at a special ceremony and recep- tion at the Hyatt Regency, Martha was awarded a very special honor by the Spanish Ambassador, His Excellency Don Antonio Jose Fornier Birmejo. Don Antonio presented her with the Orden de [sabe! La Catholica, which isa rare and unique Spanish medal. {1 was given to her for her 35 years of distinguished service as Chancellor of the Spanish Consulate. Congratula- *ions!... eee Someone who didn't want the kind of publicity that he received recently was the good-natured butcher. Peter Black. He celebrated his 43rd birthday a few days ago. He was absolutely horrified to see a large ad in the North Shore News personal greet- ings column wishing him all the very best on his 50th birthday! Somewhere he'd lost seven years of his life. This cruel prank was perpetrated by the naughty Rat Pack of Park Royal and includes, according ta the note he faxed ta me, Marks and Spencer's Ruth Kirk who's 46 years old; Al Hicklin of the Marine Centre, 56 years; 61-year-old hairstylist Bill Soprovich and the Dog’s Ear’s 51-year-old Butts Giraud. And on top of the embarrassing birthday salutation, says Peter, they seized his home and invited the top players of Park Royai and their friends to take over his waterfront estate, playing havoc with his personal possessions. Gordon Woida and the sleekly se- quinned Liz Cowenhoven of Cathay Pacific. The winning bidders on that rare Dragon Chalice, created especially for the occasion by ar- tisan Bill Koochin, were James and Emily Ho who won with the top bid of $7,000!... aes And congratulations to VanCi- ty’s recently-retired vice-president, Wayne MacKay! For the past 25 years, Wayne was the sparkplug for so many ideas and promotions for the company and was the main man behind VanCity’s Terry Fox Run, the most successful cor- porate run in Canada. Wayne didn't just organize it every year, he participated. Last year he was the hizaest money- taiser in Canada, bringing in a re- cord-breaking $9,000-plus. He retired from the company a few weeks ago to open his own financial consulting business. The icing en the cake happened Thursday at noon at the Park Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hatet. Earlier this year the VanCity execs had nominated him fer the prestigious Credit Union Distinguished Service Award and at Thursday's luncheon, it was announced that Wayne had won! The award presentation was handled by the president of the Credit Unions of British Colum- bia, Ross Montgomery... eee And with the Four Seasons, West Van resident and hotel G.M. Ruy Paes-Braga unveiled his spacious and tres elegant new ballroom Wednesday night with ‘An Evening in Champagne,” a black-tie, cork-popping cham- pagne party for some 400 of the city’s business elite, We snacked on every sort of delicacy and sipped and sampled some 13 different champagnes. North Van's Banker's Banker and Ballet B.C. promoter, Nick Masse was there with his pretty Lisa, snacking on the caviar and Sechelt oysters, and chatting with Colleen and Howard Neptim ... Jet-setter Dule Mearns was also there, radiant in pink sequins, tasting itsy-bitsy bites from the buffet. You can't indulge in food and stay thar slim. She was with the international realtor David Mooney. The North Shore’s always-tann- ed wineman Bob Becker, West Van’s attractive culinary school owner, Diana Becker, W.V.’s always lively restaurateurs Ann and Jcan Pierre Bachellerie and the widow of the late Louis Stervenou, Jeannie Stervenou, were all enjoying the event. This had to be an extra special evening fer the knowledgeable wine experts like Jon Levine, Ber- nard Hoeter, Richard Carras, Joan and Syd Cross and Shiela and Tony Gismondi and Daryl Weinbren, who are all Nerth Shore-ites. As is the beaming hotelier, G.M. and V.P. Ruy Paes-Braga, who was justly proud of his new Park Baliroom and of his execu- tive chef Wolfgang Von Wieser of North Van.
