12 - Wednesday, July 25, 1990 - North shore News AUGUST IS COMING! Learn water conservation Next month, the Going Green on the North Shore campaign focuses on water quality and conservation. Canadians are among the world’s largest consumers of this resource, but there is a great deal in- dividuals can dotocut down on the amount they use. Water quality, too, can suffer when various substances, some of them hazardous, leach from landfill sites. In August, follow these tips and help protect our valuable water supply: YOU CAN save 20 per cent of your toilet’s water usage by placing a water displacement device, such as a brick or a weighted plastic bottle. in the tank. Toilet inserts, available commercially, allow a family of four to save 45,000 litres of water per year. CHOOSE CLEANING products that are least harm- ful to our water supplies: contact environmental organizations or books for non-toxic ways to clean your body and your home. Make a good all-purpose cleaner from one gallon hot water, 4c. household ammonia, Y% c. vinegar and one tbsp. baking soda. p DON’T LET the water run continuously when ~ washing yourself or your dishes. By turning off the water when you ave brushing your teeth, and just turning it on again for rinsing, you are saving 80 per cent of the water you normally use. ASA ANYTHING POURED down a street storm drain SEA goes straight into local waterways. Don’t pollute them with oil, chemicals or other toxic materials! These hazardous wastes should be stored up for the GVRD hazardous materials collection program coming to the North Shore this fall. EcoUpdate ‘EcoHero NEWS photo Cindy Goodman CHRISLON ROBINSON of Riverwoods Co-op is an Eco-Hero by anyone’s standards. One year ago, she single-handedly got a recycling program up and running in her Mt. Seymour-area co-op. This involved motivating residents, collecting material and driving it to depots all over the Lower Mainland. Just last week, she, her husband and a friend completed new compost boxes that are already well-used by the co-op. Internationa! Paper Industries will soon be helping out by picking up the glass, meta! and plastic jugs, but their mixed paper, cardboard and mixed plastics will still be driven to overtown depots. Robinson is mov- ing to Salt Spring Island at the end of the month, but there are enough enthusiastic recyclers living at the co-op that the program will continue. -EcoNotes’ > TEENS ARE invited to take part in the Aug. 7 to 10 Teen Environment Week at Eagle Harbour Community Centre, 3575 Marine Dr., West Van.
