© open lines © A RED Rolls Royce parked outside a political candidate's strategy meeting would win some sort of Marie Antoinette award for chutzpah were it not for the driver. Bill Sleeman, financial guru to the Jim Pattison Group of Com- panies, is a thoroughly competent, self-effacing administrator. Operating with customary restraint, Jim Pattison gave Sleeman the Rolls as a retirement gift. As new as he is to this masterful British automobile, Sleeman is currently dipping his toes into the political pond, not as a candidate, but as an active supporter of Dianne Hartwick. The not-quite-so-young-anymore Ms. Hartwick, still eager, bright and attractive, was nursed on the brilliant homespun philosophy of W.A.C. Bennett, as she grew up in West Vancouver. The Hartwicks ~— particularly Mother — were Bennett family friends from Kelowna. A few weeks ago in this space we suggested that great political sport is due to take place in the four North Shore ridings: the new line-up, with an extra seat, is North Vancouver-Seymour, North Vancouver-Lonsdale, West Van- couver-Capilano and West Van- couver-Garibaldi. kee All the fun will be in the Social Credit camp, unless Doug Collins, my shy and retiring fellow colum- nist, decides to grace some un- suspecting party with his presence. The NDP will round up the usual collection of lambs and the Reform Party will make a few noises, but plan your sleep for election day. The action is now: Social Credit nominations. The eternal Jack Davis has a lock on Seymour. Speculation is that North Vancouver District Mayor Marilyn Baker will seek and win the Lonsdale nomination. As we climb the mortgages into Fantasyland, we can assume prize seats for the scramble. At last report, John Reynolds, the Eco-Warrior, was honing in on the super safe West Van-Capilano riding, leaving incumbent Angus Ree somewhat in the lurch. He might actually have to run where he lives: West Van- couver-Garibaldi. Poor planning. Reynolds, with two properties in this westernmost North Shore riding, and hefty investments at Whistler, has indicated an interest in the West Van-Capilano race. In doing so, he has meandered straight into the sights of a politi- cal cannon. . Dianne Hartwick is itching to take on the Environment Minister, but she is not the heavy artillery.’’ Dianne Hartwick is itching to take on the Environment Minister, but she is not the heavy artillery. Bill Sleeman’s Rolls Royce will be followed by a parade of tanks. Don Docksteader prefers to call them Volvos. Then there is the in- triguing presence of vocalist and environmentalist Terry Jacks, definitely not a Socred, but equally determined to support Diane. Jacks, too, wants to have a go at Reynolds. The presence of Sleeman does not ensure the endorsement of Pattison (whose house occupies one third of the constituency), but don’t be surprised if various assets come into the picture. zane It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that Dianne Hartwick has been in politics all her life. But there have been other interests. A handicapped brother influenced her to study education and ultimately to earn a master’s degree in education psychology. For two years, she had a fascinating government job as a special assistant coordinating the social services input of five ministries. Among the ministers she worked for and still respects were Grace McCarthy and Bill Vander Zalm. Once, previously, she attempted and failed to win election: an ili- ANNOUNCING: New Owners & Management at Queens Stationery Dear Customer, We at Queens Sta- tionery are eager to satisfy our customers by stocking our store with a full line of stationery items aud office supplies, as well as a new wider collection of cards, gifts, party goods and giit wrapping. For all the controversy that invariably surrounds him, John Reynolds is an extraordinari- ly gifted political campaigner. If her machine continues to gain strength, the best outcome for the Social Credit Party may be to have Reynolds contest the Garibaldi constituency, from 22nd Street in West Van to Pemberton. He has made friends throughout this territory. Hartwick’s candidacy is sure to reawaken an old issue. She and her mother have invested six years into an effort to have Powder Moun- tain developed as a new ski resort destination. With other investors, they have sunk about $2 million into this fading dream. At one point, they were making a pitch to cabinet minister Cliff Michael, when Michael used the occasion to promote the sale of some land he owned in the Shuswap. When the matter erupted publicly, Michael was forced to resign. This was merely a sideshow ina series of bureaucratic dealings in which the Hartwicks feel they were shabbily treated by the Vander Zalm government, and particularly the unlamented David Poole. “But Powder Mountain has nothing to do with my campaign,”’ Dianne Hartwick told me recently. “(My commitment to the party is as strong now as it has ever been. I’ve worked with the premier, and I’ve always been impressed by his creative ability. But we have to do a better job as an organization.” However, there is this splendid letter signed by John Reynolds, fully endorsing Powder Mountain, a testimonial conveniently forgot- ten as soon as it became con- troversial ... one wonders how many hundreds of copies will be printed. e 9 - Sunday, May 6, 1990 - North Shore News Drivers guilty of drinking RECENT CONVICTIONS in North Shore courts have resulted in fines and penalties for drinking and driving related offences: WEST VANCOUVER: Nicola Jane Buchanan Smith, 23, 1-1107 Matheson, 63, 452 West Kings Rd., North Vancouver (over .08, 30 days jail); Craig Willaim Clausen, 21, 80 Park Place Apartments, Squamish (impaired, seven days jail).
