Service offers low fees for motoring offence trials

THE CANADIAN Bar Association’s British Colum-
bia branch has introduced a new feature of its Lawyer
Referral Service, offering low fees for trials on motor
vehicle offences in the Lower Mainland.

Persons charged with a traffic offence can phone
687-3221 in Vancouver to obtain the name of a lawyer
who will act on their behalf for fees ranging from
$150 to $300 for a trial. Higher fees may be charged
‘for the more serious motor vehicle offences.

Barbara Nelson of Vancouver, president of the
B.C. branch, said the decision to introduce this new
area under Lawyer Referral Service was made to in-
form the public that a charge under the Motor Vehicle
Act can be defended by a lawyer for a low fee.

“‘Some people think they would pay a lawyer a lot
of money to fight a traffic ticket,'’ Nelson said.

**We want people to know that they can find a

lawyer to represent them on minor or routine traffic
offences at a low cost, and we'll help them through
our Lawyer Referral Service.”’

She said some non-lawyers who say they are experi-
enced in certain areas of the law are giving the public
the wrong impression about the costs involved in hav-
ing lawyers defend traffic offences.

‘*Our position is that, if you’re going to court to
defend a motor vehicle offence, you should be repre-
sented by a lawyer, and lawyers are available for this
work at modest fees,’ Nelson said.

Lawyer Referral Service, operated by the B.C.
branch of the Canadian Bar Association, was in-
troduced in the province in 1955. Supported by the
Law Foundation of B.C., it operates in 16 areas of the

“province. About 38,000 people used the service last
year.
