There are two focuses — million dollar toy-related cartoon series and 30-second action-packed adventure commercials, and negative reactions to this growing trend in toys: parents are speaking out against such play tendencies towards vio- lence. I feel negative atten- tion only adds to the profile of such questionable choices in playthings. But it’s time to take a stand. I can only state my own position, since it’s up to each one of us, as parents, to decide what we feel is right for our own family, in the morals and models we're supporting as our children grow and learn through their play. There are many other, more desirable playthings our children could be spen- ding time with. When there are so many alternatives, why choose 2 debatable one? In addition, the price you pay for such a_highly- promoted toy has to include a reasonable chunk to pay back the manufacturer for all the millions spent on publicity. Why couldn’t that chunk of the toy’s cost be put to making the toy that much better, or if the tcey is already as good as it needs to be, why couldn’t it cost less instead? After all, if the toy being considered is that good to start with, why . In a recent chat with soin¢cone, if was pul to me that sheltering our children from violence could possibly leave them unprepared for real life when they grow up. I considered this briefly. But then, I thought about my 36 years of life, including family disputes as a child, school-yard tussles, and oc- casional arguments with my spouse over our differing hopes and plans for the fam- ily and children. Wow, when I think of all the scenes which erupt over everything from borrowed make-up to hogged taco chips — and all this time three-month-old Breelana is sitting there quietly gurgling, picking up pointers so she'll have her own technique refined in another few years. My girls don't need an over-muscle-bound _ plastic- molded figurine (male OR female). And, they, like me, are highly unlikely to ever cradle a sub-machine gun or spear under their arm.
