By ROSS MEEK Council again voted to express its strong opposition to any mining within the park and to send a letter re- questing the minister of Lands Parks and Housing, Tony Brummet, call a public meeting on the subject. On Mayor Marilyn Baker’s advice, the council also voted to strike a com- mittee to coordinate the lobbying effort. Ald. Mary Segal and Murray Dykeman were appointed to the com- mittee. The motions followed a report from municipal man- ager, Mel Palmer and Segal. Palmer urged that ‘‘lobby- ing on the political side should be considered,’’ because the ‘‘minister (Brummret) has not ruled out" the possiblity of mining ac- tivities in the area.”” TREE MARKING Segal said burning, cutting and marking of trees on district land near the mining claims: which Onsun Development hopes to mine have been reported by Lynn Headwater advisory com- mittee chairman and Capilano College recreation instructor Brian White. Trees. along new park trails have been spray painted in what White calls an ‘‘act of vandalism.”’ Onsun Developments and Scope Developments, which control Crown grant mining claims on the northern border of land presently be- ing transferred from the district to the Greater Van- couver regional district for wilderness park use, want an access road through the parkland so they can further explore the possibility of reopening the old zinc mines. ' MINE POTENTIAL | At. the last council meeting, district engineer John Bremner reported that Onsun Developments’ re- quest for permission to con- struct an access road to the mineral claim is awaiting proof of the mine’s potential and an assessment of the en- vironmental impact of the road. But Onsun spokesman Alex Billwiller says he has received no such request from Brummet’s office and took the liberty of sending the minister the results of a recent airborne Beo- physical to Victoria. Billwiller admits to spray painting trees at 400-foot in-. tervals on district property, but he says ‘'1 thought it was no big deal — at least I thought. it wasn’t.’’ He also reiterated his belief that a mine would be of great economic benefit to the economy. | Distri ct | 5 - Friday, October 11, 1985 - North Shore News FOR ONLY 1 Oo? 5 980-9571 DOLLAR 688-2233 any size car* RENT ACAR In-Canada DollariInterent is a division of the Ladha group. of Rent Me This Weekend (includes 200 Free International Plaza North Van. companies.
