While the wolves were Visiting, | kept my two pooches in the basement least canis lupus accidentally swallow them while yawning. Or maybe just cast a baleful luping look in their direction. I'm sure my two guardbeasts would have died of heart attacks. It’s not that both dogs are smali. Keela, the St. Bernard, weighs over 100 pounds — how much, | don’t know, because I’m not stupid enough to have tried to pick her up. The other, Penny, is a miniature collie, so hairy you can hardly see her paws. 1 suspect a Pekenese in the woodpile, frankly. Both dogs were thrust upon me, the first by a friend who decided that the St. Bernard was leading a deprived _ex- istence, stuck in a downtown commune. Maybe she'd just got too big. Anyway, because we live a few feet beyond the edge of the municipal boundary; guess who got nominated to inherit this teenage mastadon dog whose main thrill in life seems to be to hang her tongue about a foot out of the side of her mouth and pant? Her name, when she came to us, was Tequila, but the kid couldn't say that, and besides, who wanted to name their dog after a dangerous Mexican drug? Keela she became. And her only serious problem was that she'd been living in this, commune, see, surrounded by probably dozens of unemployed people with nothing to do but sit around all day stroking her and tell- ing her their life stories. She was a bit social. Also, she'd probably never bee> outdoors more than four Rojeanne Allworth Housewife, mother of 2, published poet bh was scared to #0, but the teac’ «rs were so kind... We never did get her to Sleep outside at night. She parks in the basement, rain or starlight, although every once in a while, near full moon, when the coyotes are howling a few hundred feet away in the forest, Keela wants to get out there and howl too. Penny? She just yaps at everything. My mother-in-law dumped her on us, to make a ong story short. Penny is ap- proaching senility, but nobody knows exactly how old she is, or, more to the point, how long before she dies. My wile was shocked to discover one night that I was only sprinkling the vitamin supplement into Keela’s dish. It was sort of like the reverse of poisoning an unwanted relative. The perfect crime, i thought. Would I realiy kill Penny? OF course. And everybody knows it, therefore 1 have to keep a special eye on Penny to make sure no harm comes to her, otherwise everybody will automatically blame me, even if they can never find any proof. MOVING & STORAGE another canine aving actual timber wolves in my yard the Other day got me thinking about my own dogs. Didn't I read somewhere that dogs were out in the back yard one morning when a two or three- year-old black bear came meandering by. Did I hear a peep out of Penny? Did Keela do her famous tree-shaking St. Bernard woof? Not a chance, There they were, pressed up against the wall of the hause, as still as stuffed animals, very, very quiet, Once, after an aging Jehovah’s Witness had brav- ed the signs in the front yard saying BEWARE OF DOG, NO HUNTING OR TRESPASSING, Keela and Penny charged from around the corner of the house, and suddenly I heard Keela Screaming as though she'd been stabbed. The poor Jehovah's Witness was leaning around in a panic, somehow attached to her. It turned out she’d got a claw accidentally caught in his jacket pocket. Unable to pull her foot free, she’d had an im- mediate complete nervous breakdown. Worried about breaking her nail, | suppose. After | untangled her claw, she fled, whimpering, tail bet- ween her legs, and ever since then cowers at the sight of a human being, especially old Jehovah’s Witnesses.
