‘Dear Editor: As the Orwellian year of -1984 came to a close it was ‘worth reflecting on one of the most blatant and tragic ex- amples of double-speak that year has seen. There is an eerie and frightening significance in the deafening silence of the secular press and electronic media which indicates a will- ingness to overlook even the most blatant transgressions so long as the popular verdict is handed down. All Canadians should thank God for the catholic press and writers like Collins who are not afraid to speak out. ’ P. There is instead far more law and order than El Salvador has ever seen. There is also a respect for social justice in that over the fast four years the government has dedicated much of its resources into both. health care and a literacy campaign 80 as to provide a better life for ordinary people. The Nicaraguan government has made this a priority inspite of the difficult economic situa- tion it is in.. . Now one would think that ‘the freedom-loving Americans. would hail the progress in .Nicaragua and condemn El Salvador. Reagan though thinks dif- ferent and:this is where the double-speak comes in. When asked, Reagan claims that El. Salvador is a democratic country whereas Nicaragua is 2 Marxist totalitarian: regime sending ‘arms ‘to the ‘guerillas: in El Saivador. Nicaragua in fact is no more leftist then the NDP and as for the claim that they .the Sager building. Surely anyone with any parking is at a premium in this. area now, and with the added new developments on "Bellevue and on Haywood, to allow’ a ‘further 7 new businesses with only 9 park- ‘ing stalls instead of 26 stalls. as would be required if this was a new building, is nothing ‘short of being not only unfair to the other mer- that" Ambleside, SHEAR COMFORT 2351 Burrard St. "="~- @, 739-5711 ouble-speak’ by the U.S. are supplying arms, the CIA has been looking hard for evidence of arm shipments for four years and hasn’t found one shred of such evidence, Reagan also asserts without facts that the Nicaraguan November elec- tion was a ‘‘phoney’’ yet ob- jective observers state that it was far more fair than the El Salvador elections. Nicaragua . therefore is a democratic country by all definitions. As a result of these un- truths Reagan is spreading about Nicaragua the American government is engaged in an unofficial war against Nicaragua. The Globe reported recently that ClA-backed guerillas am- bushed and killed twenty-two coffee pickers after inflicting “unspeakable. cruelty’? on them. In other words inno- cent workers-are being killed in order to disrupt the coffee harvest. which Nicaragua depends on’ for foreign currency. One can only speculate on the real reasons why Reagan chants but of complete dis- regard or concern for the shoppers of Dundarave, who will shop elsewhere if they cannot find a parking place in the immediate area! Council has been able to come up with money to pur- chase park. land, water front property, etc., but why can’t council look into the future by providing a parking lot for Dundarave ‘as well as instead of creating bottlenecks i in these areas? Mark my words, if this development is allowed to go ahead without providing more parking, stalis, it will come back to haunt all of us whether you are a merchant or shopper! If the Orr complex on the South side of the street has to is engaged in a dirty war against Nicaragua. Perhaps it is to accomodate vested in- terests in Central America, that being the American multinationals. For instance, Nicaragua's social programs such as their ambitious health and literacy campaign ultimately are paid for out of resource revenues and therefore corporate profits. Also unions thrive in Nicaragua whereas union leaders are often shot in El Salvador. As a result wages and labor standards are kept at a minimum in El Salvador but are rising in Nicaragua. The Globe and Mail reported in September that farm wages in Nicaragua would be in- creased up to 100% this year to match productivity gains. Therefore the workers direct- ly share in any increases in productivity. It is no wonder that the multinationals prefer the death squads of El Salvador since they are clear- ly better for profits.
