Foe MULRONEY TO VISIT Conservatives go after NDP in search of more NOT SATISIFIED with a more than 20 point lead on the Liberals in the latest Gallup popu- larity poll, the federal Progressive Conservative party is targetting a number of B.C. NDP MPs. Conservative strategy in the west is shifting toward an attack on ridings now held by the NDP in attempts to increase the number of Conservative MPs in the next federal election. High-profile Tomes, the likes of Flora MacDonald and John Crosbie, are making speaking tours of ridings on Vancouver Island and in the Interior of the province and Tory leader Brian Mulroney will make a tour of B.C. in mid-May. The latest Gallup poll shows the NDP have slipped to about half their former strength, with only 11 per cent of the decided voters backing Canada’s third party. Flora MacDonald has just completed a tour of two Vancouver Island _ ridings which the Conservatives lost to the NDP by less than 1,000 votes in the last federal election. Crosbie will visit those same ridings, and others, later. Conservatives have, over the course of the last few elections, seen the NDP as their main opponent in Western provinces where Libera! forces have been weak. With the polls now claiming that the NDP can expect only minor support in a provincial election, the Conseravtives are expected to sharpen their attack on the NDP both in the House of Commons and in ridings across the country.
