NEWS STAFF in North Vancouver, a luckless clerk at Mark’s Work Wearhouse on Lonsdale was struck on the head several times by a han- dgun during a robbery of that store. In Horseshoe Bay, mean- while, three victims of a knife-wielding thief gave chase but were unsuccessful in capturing him. The North Vancouver rob- bery took place shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when a lone male walked into Mark’s Work Wearhouse and pro- duced the handgun. The man, his features covered by a balaclava, forc- ed the employee to open a safe and hand over the money inside. During the course of the ° robbery, the clerk was struck several times on the head with the handgun. The thief escaped out the rear door of the business with what police say was a ‘‘substantial’’ amount of money. He was wearing a tan ski jacket at the time. The West Vancouver rob- bery took place Sunday about 30 minutes after midnight. Three employees of the Troller Pub were walking to the nearby Canadian Im- perial Bank of Commerce with the evening’s receipts when they were accosted by a man wearing a ski mask and armed with a knife. The man demanded the cash and then started to run away when it was handed over. The three victims gave chase. One caught the crook, who turned on him, still brandishing the knife, and told him to back off. The wary victim did so and the thief scrambled away. West Vancouver Police ar- rived on the scene with a tracking dog but were unable to find the thief. The robber is five feet, eight inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and is in his early 20s. Anyone with information on either theft ts asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 985-1311 or the West Vancouver Police at 922-4141.
