Harold Stackhouse, 62, and George Bremner, 61, drove their last runs after working for Metro Transit for 38 ahd 35 years respec- tively. When Stackhouse began driving streetcars on Lonsdale Avenue in 1945, the pace on the North Shore was slower. **Fhe pace was different . . . it didn’t have the popula- tion it does now,”’ he said. Stackhouse drove a street- car that picked up and drop- ped off commuters going to Vancouver via ferries at the bottom of Lonsdale. Two years later, North Vancouver switched to buses. Most bus drivers have at least one tale of a close call on the road. Stackhouse has one, too. Once while driving south through Stanley Park during the evening rush hour, a car coming the other way swerved into his lane and only stopped at ‘‘the last second.”’ Stackhouse stopped his bus, and investigated. The driver had blacked out. **It was a little scary at the time,’’ admitted Stackhouse. ‘*But when (the other driver) By ADRIAN CHAMBERLAL came out of it, he was ail right.”’ Bremner has driven on the North Shore since 1950, and drove street cars in Van- couver for a brief time in 1949, just before the switch- over there. He said one big difference between modern buses and streetcars is the brakes. To stop a street car “‘*you just threw on the air brakes and prayed,’’ he said. Bremner and his wife plan to vacation in California for a few months. He said he’t miss his passengers and the other bus drivers. ‘‘Most of them are very nice people,”’ he said. Stackhouse said he plans to swim, camp, fish and play golf now that he’s retired. He and his wife sometimes travel to the northern interior to pan for gold. ‘*‘But we don’t find anything at all,’’ he said. Stackhouse said during his final bus run, he’d be think- ing that ‘‘. . . it’s the end of one period of my life, and the beginning of another. ‘‘iCll take a while to get us- ed to it,”” he added.
