Jason is one of 35 young Canadians chosen to take part in this year's Canada World Youth exchange pro- gramme. He and six other Canadians will join seven Somalian young prople in Salmon Arm where they will live with families and work on community oriented pro- jects for three and a half months. Jason doesn't speak Somalian, and most of the Somalians don’t speak much English, so the main com- munication will be in limited French, through a translator, and of course through sign language. “I've been looking through a Somalian-English dic- tionary to pick up a few words,” Jason said, to help prepare himself. For the Canadians, the Salmon Arm and then | real adventure begins in November when the whole group travels from Salmon Arm to Somalia for another three and a half months. Jason is “not really. sure what to expect” when he gets to Somalia, but he is “interested in what develop- ment such countries are go- ing through.” The communi- ty he will be going to is most- ly agricultural so. he will be living and working with a familyonafarm. — After a year at Capilano College, studying science and arts, he decided to. apply to Canada World Youth to travel to a third world coun- try. ae He was interested:in learn- ing about developing coun- tries and he also.saw it as a “chance to get some traelling in without costing anything.” The program, which has been operating for 12 years, is designed to give: young people ) better. understanding of themselves while discovering other parts of the world.
