SOME TIPS ON STAYING INSECT. FREE
Don’t let cockroaches bug your holiday

aircraft at 35,000 feet. With
great presence of mind, she
took a napkin, grabbed the
monster and shoved it into a
sick-sack, closing the top
tightly. The flight attendant
was understandably pale as
she hustled the sack away.

It's hard to know for sure
where the beast had come
from but my reader suggests
that it may have crept into
her open purse when she had
placed it on the floor in a
restaurant just prior to
departure.

How many pests do we
bring home when we travel?
A lot more than you'd care
to meet! Your destination
doesn’t have to be exotic,
either, says Carl Nielsen of
the North Shore Pest
Control. “Any hotel can
have roaches, even the
best.” He went on to tell me
about several Canadian
hotels where he has stayed
and his trained eye has
detected unregistered guests
sharing his room.

What can travellers do to
prevent lugging the beasts
home in their bags? Quite a
bit. First of all, cockroaches
lay their eggs in a capsule
and Mother Roach hauls this

around on her back for quite
a while.

The babies hatch in this
capsule and appear in the
first four or five (or more,
depending on the breed)

If Mama Roach gets
frightened, or just tired of
carrying the capsule, she
glues it onto something solid
- maybe your suitcase. It is
wise to check your bags and
all contents carefully when
you return home for any
seed-like objects adhering to
the surface. Look for
something about 3/8" long.

After the capsule stage.
roaches are even harder to
identify because each stage
is completely different than
any other and you may think
you've just a harmless crawly
from the garden. If m doubt,
capture the critter and take
it along to a pest control
specialist.

Cockroaches are  noc-
turnal and if you've a hunch
you might have imported a
family, wait until dark and
then snap a light on. You
might be able to see them
scurry away.

Nielsen recommends, too,
that

you keep your
belongings off the floor in
hotel rooms. Aside from

roaches, other pests such as
spiders, scorpions, fleas, lice
and mites have less chance
of invading.

The life cycles of pests can
vary a great deal and your
problems may appear two or
three months down the road
from your last vacation.

Pests, especially roach
sacs, can be passed from bag
to bag in cargo areas of
planes and trains. Some
airports are particularly
infested. Wouldn't it be mice
if all airports, stations and
public conveyances were
routinely fogged for pests?

Nielsen told me that
public waiting areas are
particularly bad for fleas and
mites. Your most essential
travel companion should be
a can of insect repellent.

Many people pick up
mites that burrow under the
skin. If you've got a rash or
suspicious area on your skin,
see a doctor. It may also be
necessary to have your
house fumigated to get rid of
any that have left your body
and nested someplace else,
even on your houseplants.

are allowed to use are in-
effective on the egg-stage of
these mites and you've got to
wait until they hatch.
