In_ Tribute, presented by the West Vancouver Little Theatre, that actor is Don MacKay. Without MacKay’s superb portrayal of theatrical agent Scottie Templeton, Tribute could be written off as another well-meaning but Brothers to exhibit art Distinctive styles amateurish attempt to duplicate a Broadway hit. But MacKay does justice to the script by Bernard Slade. Like Jack Lemmon, who played Templeton on Broadway, MacKay — suc- ceeds in showing the naked fear and insecurity that lurks uneasily below the surface of even shallow, clowning Scottie Templeton. There are other good performances in Tribute — Derek Preen as Templeton's estranged son, and Andre Danyliu as Templeton’s friend, Lou Daniels. Other members of the cast range from fair — Janice Haakons as Templeton’s ex-wife — to annoying — Gerri Clarke as a model who befnends both son and father. Other problems — such as voices that sometimes don't carry as far as they should — are minor. Trnbute is the story of a man who hides from his problems behind a wisecrack. When he learns (three months before the ‘Tribute’ birthday celebration of the ttle) that he has’ leukemia, the wisecracks stop falling from his lips. His son, who seems to be the exact opposite of Templeton in character and a A DUEL of brushes will tnke place most of April at the North Van Civic gallery as the brothers display their art jointly. But Tribute is comedy as well as melodrama, and Templeton’s hilarious antics and one liners prevent it from tuming into’ soap opera.
