Pollution cases mounting up in N. Van

And now the Fisheries
department 1s also. in-
vestigating two further
instances of pollution in
North Vancouver District.

One involves an incident
two months ago in which a
North Vancouver woman
saw a tanker full of sludge
being dumped at the same
landfill site. The sludge was
found to contain high levels
of toxic heavy metals and to
have onginated from the
ERCO pulp and paper
chemical manufacturing
plant at Maplewood

And the latest incident
occurred last weekend when
a sewage pump malfunc
tioned, pumping effluent
into Hastings Creek. at Ross
Road

Though the area had been
cleaned up by the
municipality when Fisheres
officer kFlovd McKee
checked there on Monday
he says he found several
dead fish yust downstream

The Lynnterm dumping
came to the attention of
Fisheries after it was wit
nessed by three heavy duty
mechamics working there

The preservative
Woodbnte 24 is betnpg
analyzed by Fisheries. who
suspect its largely made up
of pentachloraphenol (PCP).
a highly toxic material which
causes skin rashes and 4

burning sensation

The contents of a diptank
which was to be cleaned
were emptied into another
container tank and into a 20
ft. long tank trailer. ac-
cording to one of — the
mechanics

The tank trailer. he says.
was picked up by a 50,000 Ib.
lift truck and the valve was
then opened as the tank was
backed over an eight-acre
area of tarmac

There are several storm
drains on the tarmac which
lead into Burrard Inlet and
Lynn Creck

The infet is used by up fo
200 000 undervearling
chinook salmon and 2.000
tons of underyearling
herring According to
Fishenes, more than two
million young fish enter the
harbor between February
and October. with many of
the frv which rear in the inlet
coming from Lynn Creek

what was happening to the

McKee praises the
Mechamies and the union for

“They did very well and
we give them full credit,” he
says. “They stayed on the
site and gave us a statement
and identified the = driver
when the foreman would not
tell me.”

“There was material tn the

and some had got into the
lines. | took a sample out of
the tank and it killed all the
sample fish within = five
minutes We also sampled
for chemical analysis from
the tank. from a pool on the
tarmac and from two storm

Lynnterm would be for
allowing a deleterious
substance to enter water
frequented by fish

The mechanic who spoke
to the News says there has
been concern by staff at
Lynnterm as well as at
Seaboard, where he has also
worked, for at least) two
years about the way the
chemical is handled

McKee says he is struck
by apparent contradictions
in’ Lynnterm’s handling of
the material

“They have a built-in
containment system for the
matenal and have gone to a
certain amount of care to
handje the material
responsibly but I don't
understand why there is such
a blatant misuse as dumping
ilover the tarmac ”
