Power of prayer could stop war,
local Anglican minister explains

WITH MANY of the world’s na-
tions now in the grip of war,
many people are praying for
peace.

There are many questions that
can arise when one thinks about
prayer, however. What, if any,
tangible effect does it have? Does
one have to believe in a God to
pray? Can one abuse prayer
through using it to try to achieve
selfish desires?

The Rev. William Pike, rector
of St. Catherine’s Anglican
Church in North Vancouver,
discussed some of these questions
with the News following his
church’s all-day Vigil for Peace
that took place last Saturday.

From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., groups
of church members took turns
praying for the situation in the
Middle East. Each hour, another
candle was lit to symbolize the
hope for peace.

While Pike says he didn't expect
the preparations for war to come
to an abrupt halt simply because
of the St. Catherine's vigil, he
says ‘‘if individually everybody
was praying around the world, in-
cluding Saddam Hussein and his
armies, it would have an effect.

“The vigil was also an effort to
show the community that we
believe there has to be a way to
solve the world’s disputes other

Some people believe it is wrong
to petitior, God to change a situa-
tion; to, in effect, be so presump-
tuous as to give God an agenda.

Pike says that is why his church
chooses to pray fer a situation, it
doesn’t tell God specifically what
to do about the situation.

“We're not telling God his
business,’ he explains. ‘‘We’re
trying to have God share his
business with us.”

And when someone does pray
to God with a particular desire,
Pike says ‘twe have to temper our
request that it be God’s will that
be done, not our selfish will.’

Pike notes that the value of
prayer is not necessarily that it

a situation, but rather
that it changes our attitude
towards that situation and our
capacity to deal with it or work
for changes we believe are neces-
sary.

“We are changed when we
pray,”* says Pike. “A big part of
prayer is asking God to change
our attitude, not the situation.”

And while individual, con-
templative prayer is ‘‘very, very
important in terms of personal
prayer,’’ Pike sees great value in
praying wit. others.

“We find that the larger the
group, the more powerful the
prayer, in that it engenders a
greater sense of spirituality or
contact with God,”’ he says.

And on a more practical level,
‘“‘yathering together to pray really
helps, [I think, to focus your
prayer. You can’t fall asleep or
waffle around.”

Pike says that reading prayers
together in church helps engender
a feeling of community and lets
individuals focus their personal
prayers within the general words
of the service,

And Pike offers what may be
the most important advice for
anyone who engages in prayer,
whether at church or at home:
“You’ve got to get up off your
knees and go live your prayer
life.”’
