The family immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1958, when Cornelius was seven years old, and settled in a rented cottage on a Dempsey Road estate that still éxists today. It was there, at the age of 20, that he became interested in dance. Twos years duter, in 1972, he went 10 the Toronto Dance Theatre. From Toronto he travel- led to Jondon, New York and Japan, working in different com- panies along the way. In 1986, he’ returiied to Van- couver for Expo, ‘and: decided it was lime to stay. he has his own company, ~ f the-Bance Corps, previously called Mountain Dance Theatre before he took it aver six months ago. Cor- nelius says the mandate of the group is ‘trying to employ and deyelop focat and independent chorcographers."* Future plans include an evening at the Firehall Theatre in September as part of the Fringe Festival, a major performance after Christmas and educational workshops and performances in community centres under. sponsor- ship from Van City.
