The 1000-heetare estate boasts long established vinifera plantings
that inchtde Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot,
Chardonnay, and Chenin Blane. Onfy grapes grown on the prop-
erty are used to produce a wide and eclectic range that includes
Champbrulé, a tine of four sparklers, (among them a pleasing,
apple-toned off'dry Blane de Blanes Pinot Chardonnay) as well
as a refreshing, light, fruity, sparkling Pinot Noir and a luscious,
tawny Passito made from dried grapes. In all, L.A. Cetto pro-
duces nine million litres of wine a year (equivalent to about 60%
of the entire real B.C. harvest!), as well as pre-mixed sangria or
brandy — Mexico's most popular alcoholic drink.

Cetto wines have been nurtured for 35 years by winemaker
Camillo Magoni, who hails originally from a sinall town just out-
side Milan, Italy. He exudes a certain charm and quiet, unassum-
ing confidence that only experience can bring. No surprise also,
with its Italian heritage, that the winery also produces excellent
Nebbiolo and Barbera, both grapes which do well in the very
warm, dry climate. In fact, the best food and wine pairing of our
visit was a delicious barbecued rib-eye doused in a rich black pep-
per sauce that went perfecdy with the peppery spiciness of the
“96 Nebbiolo, Baha’s soaring summer temperatures offer no
problems for npening and deliver 2 consistency of vintage,

west valley channels moderating breezes from the nearby ocean
and nights are relatively cool and mean rot is nonexistent.

The Certo family has recently been successful in highly com-
petitive markets such as the U.K, where consumers have
responded to several awards from London’s prestigious
International Wine Challenge. Cetto’s °93 Petite Sirah walked
away with ‘vith best red of the year in 1995.

Currently, 09 local shelves (if vou look for them) you'll find:

* L.A. Cetto 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon. Lerit breath for at least
an hour to appreciate plummy, spicy notes underpinned by sweet
oak and firm tannins with lingering pepper. Delicious with steak or
srg Cheddar. At $10.50, turns a barbecue into a banquet
(LDB).

* LA. Cetto 1998 Zinfandel. Lively fruit with forward raspber-
ry notes and some herbal nuances with spice to close: Keep an eve
out for the “99, which is superb. Great value at $10.50 (LDB).

* L.A. Cetto 1998 Petite Sirah. Intense, plummy fruit with
some prune, hints of anise and chocolate. Great depth for the
money, $10-S12 (Liberty Wines has the °97).

No doubt, as it has elsew! here, Certo will yet make a name for
Mexican wines in B.C. — but a sign to point the way would cer-
tainly help!
