8 - North Shoro News — Wednesday, September 27, 2070 Dear Editor: Once again Trevor Lautens has voiced his opposi- tion to abortion (Sept. 15). Once again I feel like the night to an abortion is a cruel game of cat and mouse. Should anyone take this right for granted, be sure that at any given time some people will chink they have the right to make repro- ductive decisions for others when it is really none of their business. A woman's right to decide whether or not she can face the risks and responsibilities of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood must remain her decision. In our society, in fact in most societies, mother- hood is a great risk. For many women, battering by a mate starts dur- ing pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancies happen as a result of rape, incest, and mistakes. Very young victims of incest may not even realize they are pregnant, hence the very real need to teach girls the proper names of their reproductive anatom- ical parts in order for them to comprehend what is happening to their rodies. A great many adults don't even know the proper names of female ‘genitalia. oppression, but he never speaks to any of the mea- sures that would possibly contribute to a lesser need for abortion in the first place. Of course, I ani refer- ring to the irresponsible behaviour of men who fail to take responsibility to prevent a pregnancy when they engage in sexual activity with a female of reproductive possibility. However [ do have sume suggestions. Women should be shows respect for their value as human beings by law and by cetigions. Parenthood and the contributions of women as mothers and nurturers should be recognized in practical terms. Men who _cause an unwanted pregnancy should be forced by law to a) mandatory sterilization (paternity to be determined by approved bloud tests, possibly a DNA bank of information for such purposes could bc kept filed with a person's care card number); b) reason- able and mandatory financial support of the woman and the child for the entire chiidhood time of the child without putting the caregiver mother at risk of violence; c) adequate and affordable licensed daycare to be paid by the father. The costs involved in pregnancy and child raising ought to be burne by the father as long as the needs To make abortion illegal will not stop abortions from occurring. It will put a lot of women at risk for septic abortions and terrible deaths. Young children will be let without mothers. There will be more women raising children without the benefits of edu- cation or job training. There will be more kids at risk. Health-care costs will rise, jails will get fuiler, and there will be a for more kids with a hopeless future. There are benefits for the rich with the advent of many unwanted children: cheap fabour, child pornography, and child Prostitution, to name a few. One only has to observe in most third world coun- tries where there is no access to legal or affordable reproductive information, including birth control and abortion, the living realities of child abuse: star- vation, child prostitution and child labour. Sandra Frederiks SandyGuy@telus.net North Vancouver Thanks for helping out Dear Editor: Thank you to the lovely young ladies that came to my aid when I fell on the sidewalk at 15th and St. Georges in North Vancouver. Thank you to the response team, ambulance drivers and of course the staff at Lions Gate emergency — Dr. Murray, Allison and all. Thank you. Vi Milton North Vancouver Nude calendar pose immoral Dear Editor: The North Shore News reports (Sept. 17) that North Vancouver District Councillor Heather “Dunsford poses (nude) for charity.” I would call it immorality, disguised as charity. s Are we so blind in our society that we help the homeless by posing nude in a eal-: endar entitled, “Dames for Homelessness?” Are ve so blind that we even don’ t know : of the pregnant woman and child take precedence over the woman’s ability to educate and support her- self. Provisions for old age and disability should be factored in as weil. This cost obligation should be If a man is going to stray, he usually does when the woman is pregnant. This adds an added risk to a pregnancy, exposing a woman to venereal disease that may not pone ble while the woman is preg- nant, not to mention the possibility of disastrous results at the completion of the pregnancy. _ Ifthe woman has a life-threatening medical con- dition that would result in her death and the death of the fetus by continuing the pregnancy, who is served by denying her a legal and safe therapeutic abortion? - Trevor Lautens seems to always take the opportu- mandatory law across the nation. None of the above measures, if implemented, should in any way interfere with a woman's right to choose to abort or not. It is my hope that by offering the above sugges- tions, that men will be encouraged not to rape, to stop sexually abusing children, and to shoulder the responsibility that is theirs when they engage in sexu- our blindness? fs there really anyone so foolish to think that such an example helps mothers with = f children to get their lives together? The ladies volunteering for a project like. this - should look az their own lives. My hope is that all the participants will regret their involvement with this distaste: ful project and that they will help the homeless in more positive ways. : : Inge Claus‘ “nity to bash women who speak up against their al activity. West Vancouver pe ple with guns frightening . Dear Editor: © : On Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Mailbox, L, Petrie writes, (quot- ing somewhat out o context), “our local police force (don’t - know) the difference between a real threat and a bear.” Right on. -.- [shave watched our Disneyesque police force shoot bears. Whether or-not they do this with relish I cannot say. But it fright- ens’ me. It frightens me because I am, along with absolutely * everyone else, routinely stopped by these people with guns and asked, “Have. you had any alcohol this evening?” Well, if these * people bien soe cannot perceive the difference between a driver who is d-one who is not, than perhaps they may not every time, perceive the difference between 2 man and a bear. : ‘Ya know what I'm sayin’?
