The Canadian International College is a North Vancouver school which introduces foreign students to Canadian culture and improves their English-language skills. Together, the seniors and Japanese students from the school recently proved that friendship can cross many barriers: Jan- guage, culture, evel. age. For nine weeks this fall, the students went to Neighbourhood House to spend time with the seniors. Before they went the stu- dents prepared a presentation on the topic for the week, then guided an activity in which the Golden Circle members ‘could participate. “We had one senior, she’s 87, and she was so proud of her- self tor crying sushi when they made it,” said Gail Robinson, who coordinates senio * programs at NSNH. During other weeks, the participants tried origami, Japanese calligraphy, games, music, Icarned about traditional Japanese holidays and more. “For the students, it’s an opportunity to hear about issues relating to seniors, and learn to value and appreciate their con- tribution to society,” said Judy McMillan, a teacher at the col- lege. “Presenting in a different language is a Iso a challenge for them. “It’s so rich for both sides,” added Robinson. “They really do make deep connections and many of them have stayed in touch outside the program.” FLEA MARKET: Sunday, Dec. 12, 9 a.m.-2 > p.m, Eagles Hall, 170 W. ard St., N.V.
