Juno award winner Brad Turner and his A band and Rejean Marois’ vocal ensem- ble Nirecap will pay homage to Ellington tonight, 8 p.m., at the Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre. To reserve tickets call the box office at 990-7810. Trumpeter Turner’s star is on the rise on the Canadian jazz front. His band Metalwood has picked up a couple of Junos for best contemporary jazz album — onc in 1997 and one in 1998, Joe Williams, Oliver Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Loveno aid Rene Rosnes are among the artists he’s performed with. Turner is a member of the Capilano College faculty. Rejean Marois, also on the facuity of Capilano College, conducts vocal jazz ensembles as well as a stage band. Marois teaches vocal arranging and composition. Trombonist Marois has been in demand throughout North America as a music clinician, adjudicator, con- ductor, music advisor and arranger for several years. He has spent numerous years as a composer, arranger, publisher and edu- eator. He received a nomina- tion for a Genie Award (Canadian Academy of Cinema) for the soundtrack to the film, Les Deux Aveux. Pianist, bandleader and composer Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, 1899- 1974, is the subject of the April issue of Jazsiz. The publication has dedicated its April issue to the life and music of Ellington. The local tribute to Duke Ellington continues April 23 to 36 at The Cotton Club in Vancouver.
