By Peggy Trendell-Whittaker Contributing Writer Mapieweod Flats is the largest remaining wetland in Burrard Inlet, and wetlands are one of the most diverse, productive and essential habitats for a wide range of wildlife, including exotic butterflies, green. backed herons, tree frogs, river otters and songbirds. Years of tobbying by naturalists recently resulted in the 70-acre site, owned primarily by the Vancouver Port Corporation and partially by the District of North Vancouver, being declared a wilderness sanctuary in partnership with Environ-ment Canada, which will be building a scientific facility on part of the land. The rest of the area is for the birds, as well as amphibians, mam- mals, insect and plant life. The Wild Bird Trust (WBT), headed by West Vancouver's Dick Beard, has been designated to man- age the sunctuary. Beard says that the plans, which include a small nature house, will cost about $200,000 over the next five years, along with thousands of volunteer hours. Volunteers are invited to come lend a hand on the third Saturday of each month, starting at 10 a.m., and ‘it's BYOG — bring your own work gloves, please. Along with physical work on the site, which is located on the Dollarton Highway across from the Crab Shack, people will also be needed to do wildlife inventories.
