NV company eyes SeaBus as vehicle for new power source

A HYDROGEN-POWERED SeaBus
will be gliding across Burrard Inlet
before the turn of the century if North
Vancouver’s Rend Technologies has its
way.

The SeaBus would be the first suctace vessel
in the world to be fuelled by hydrogen.

enabling technology which allows hydrogen to
be stored in the keel of vessels like the SeaBus

develop what Cause describes as an “inex-
haustibie hydrogen-powered SeaBus” which
would be “the most energy clean and energy
efficient marine transportation in the world.”
The plan was unveiled at a meeting
Wednesday attended by members of government
departments, potential investors, and the media.
Rendina, a marine engineer and marine sur-
veyor. allempted to explain in a simple fashion
the Hydrogen Hydride Keel and the Hydro-Ship
system he has developed. He noted that hydro-

ven is the most abundant and cleanest-burning of

all fuels. The gas happens to be readily available
in the Burrard Inlet area because Canadian
Occidental Petroleum produces it as a waste
product of its chloroalkali industry.

There are three tradidonal methods of safely
storing hydrogen: compressed as a gas: chilled to
its Ticquigh state:

metal hydride. Meial hydrides absorb hydrogen
iike a sponge. In Rendina’s design, chunks of a
metal hydride such as ferrous titanium store the
hydrogen inside the boat keel. acting simultane-
ously as bailast and as a power source for an
integrated machine. A number of systems can
use hydrogen as fuel, including: the internal
combustion engine (which can be converted): the
locally-developed Ballard Fuel Cell (which con-
verts hydrogen to electrical power), and small
compact stem turbine systems.
