Vancouver (Lonsdale Quay Plaza) EXPERIENCE AND COMMITMENT RE-ELECT BARBARA HOWARD SCHOOL TRUSTEE WEST VANCOUVER West Van’s INGLEWOOD PRIVATE hospital manager David Ail denied Nov. | that a pro- posed second-storey addi-. tion would turn the West Vancouver facility into an exclusive home for the elite. John Wallace, who lives near the hospital on Taylor Way, said the second-storey - addition will add only. 16 beds to the 76 now available. : “IT can only conclude that for the facility to be upgraded... it (the cost) will be taken out of our accessibility,’’ Wallace suggested. But Ail said that Inglewood cannot become exclusive because it relies on government funding. ‘‘We’re paid the same, no mat- ter where it (the facility) is,’ he said. According to project architect Scott Gordon, Inglewood will be upgraded from two- and four-bed wards with shared bathrooms to single rooms and private baths. “But that is what the market is demanding now,”’ said Gordon. He said the renovation will be more costly than tearing the facil- - ity down and starting again. The result will be a_ building with four self-contained wings, or ‘pods,’ to accommodate people in need of varying levels of care. But Wallace, who is an archit- ect, is concerned with aspects of the design that may not be up to building code standards. Beth Haysorm, a candidate for West Vancouver District Council in the upcoming Nov. 20 municipal election, worried about the ability of wheelchair-bound patients to escape from fire from the proposed second floor. “Tt could potentially be a disaster waiting to happen,’’ she said. Other neighbors are concerned that Inglewood is moving away from being a quiet private hospital to become a major facility with more of an impact on the residen- tial area, Complaints about noise from kitchen roof fans also surfaced. The proximity of busy traffic on Taylor Way is a hazard to In- glewood residents, who have been knewn to wander confused in the neighborhood, Fred Masuch wrote in a letter to council. Some residents, who have expe- rienced a number of expansions since Inglewood was opened in 1963, want assurances that a third storey will not be contemplated for the hospital in the future. - Because the district’s Advisory Design Panel and Advisory Plan- ning Commission have already approved the Inglewood plan, Coun. Pat Boname called for a three-week adjournment to allow time for a staff report to clarify oulstanding issues. “This is very much needed. in our community. I’m glad more beds would be available. There is a crying need for them,” said Coun, Diana Hutchinson. Inglewood private hospital pro- vides extended care. In combina- tion with Inglewood Manor and Lodge intermediate care facilities, the private hospital currently ac- commodates about 210 people.
