Umeeda Switlo and Michael Murphy - In their own words What kind of reaction have you had so far? Murphy: ‘It’s been nothing short of phenomena!.”’ How will customers benefit from the services CBO is offering? Murphy: ‘‘With Ticketmaster, you're a one-time sell. After you buy a ticket all the information — seating preference, what concert you attended — is gone. With CBO, if you, say, call up and ask for two tickets to a concert for your friends, we can see where you're sitting and try to seat you next to each other."’ Switlo: ‘‘We keep information and develcp a relationship with you. We want to start to know you and your tastes.”’ What's your background in the entertainment business? Murphy: “I worked for Famous Players for years in advertising, promotions, and marketing. I finally got to the point where [ was running 35 theatres in B.C. I’ve also worked for CKWX and C-JAZZ, and for Canada Post in their Event Media department.” Switlo: ‘‘Gary was very involved, but I’m a marine biologist and have spent a long time in the field.’” What does it take to do something like this? Switlo: ‘‘Guts, lots of money and the right spirit.’” What kinds of events have you done so far? Murphy: ‘‘We didn’t want to start out with something huge like a Bruce Springsteen concert, but with a few small events which would allow us to work out the bugs. We did the Grapes of Wrath concert and a Halloween bash at the Com- modore. Pretty soon we'll be ready for everything.”’ How low will your service charges be? Switlo: ‘it depends on the event. Right now Canada has the highest service charges in the world, and Vancouver has the highest in Canada. There’s no need for it.’” Are you the first ones to try to put the community spirit back in- to ticket purchasing? Switlo: ‘It’s a worldwide trend for com- munities to take control of tick- elting — it’s not just Michael Murphy and Umeeda Switlo doing it.
