| MAY be working myself out of a job by enthusing upon this latest eco- development, but that’s the chance Fl have to take. Besides, it’s something that’s going to be of great use to me in my environment research, and I’m willing to bet a lot of readers will benefit as well. Under discussion is the Cana- dian Recyciing Information Ex- change Society (CRIE), a non- profit organization that operates out of Deep Cove. Its president is Jennie Keeran, a member of the Going Green on the North Shore committee. CRIE is an electronic bulletin board that allows environmen- talists to swap queries and infor- mation on a wide variety of topics. All that’s needed is a computer with a hard drive, a modem (about $150) and the CRIE software that costs individ- uals $25 and businesses $30. Name Address Postal Code CRIE membership (organization) CRIE membership (individual) Payment by (choose one): Cheque Card Number Send to: co From that point on, there is no cost to using the system, which was developed by CRIE co- founder and director Dave Harms. And even computerless sorts can get in on the fun — public terminals will eventually be in- stalled in the Vancouver public libraries and a variety of retail outlets. The program allows users to re- cord waste they are trying to get rid of or look for materiz3s that others are discarding. There’s a calendar of events that you can add to, a list of *tgreen’’ funding sources to help your project along, and research information on a wide range of issues. If you are looking for an en- vironmental product or service and don't see it in the database, or if you have a question that needs answering, you can type in your plea and see if any of the other users can be of assistance. I am one of the three ‘‘beta testers’? who are test-driving the program to get any of the bugs Organization City/Prov. CRIE currently has a Challenge 91 student touring environmental organizations and businesses and loading their relevant information into the databank. If groups or businesses have in- forruation that they think would be appropriate for inclusion in the databank, they are welcome to fax it to CRIE at 929-4167. And any retailers with a com- puter, be they supermarkets or bookstores, who wish to draw customers in by offering a public access termina! can call Jennie at 929-3835, ext. 3. CRIE has a large advisory board with members ranging from the City of Vancouver, to the B.C. Business Council, to the B.C. Buildings Corp., to the North Shore Recycling Program. All advisory board members have pledged to make the service known to their colleagues and put the system into use, so the infor- mation available to all of us on the data base should be wide ranging indeed. “It enables people to share in- formation and make better deci- sions,’’ says Jennie of the service. “It’s poor decision-making that’s created all the pollution in the world.”” To date, the project has been funded by the District of North Vancouver, the Greater Vancouver Regional District, and the VanCity Savings Union. Most recently, funding has been received from the National Research Council, Environment Canada's Environment Week pro- gram and the B.C. Tel Employees Community Fund. Software should be available to individuals within the week. To become a member of CRIE, fill in the registration form printed along with this column and mail it to the address shown.
