By Jeremy Hainsworth Contributing Writer The Ministry of Education in- troduced the program in September !990 so that parents could have more choice in when their children were first enrolled in school. Under the previous system, children almost a year apart were entering school at the same time. “There were sometimes big dif- ferences in children,’ said Lesley Spry, District 45’s coordinator of elementary programs. ‘‘The youngest didn’t always adapt easi- ly to school. In choosing the entry date, parents should consider not only children’s intellectual devel- opment but also their emotional, social and physical development.”’ But parents are worried about their children’s social development after they enter school under the dual-entry program. Janice Haakons’ five-year-old daughter, Kristen, started school in September 1990. While Haakons said her daugh- ter loves school, she said it has been hard for Kristen to form any long-term friendships because the classes are split up as the students who started earlier are moved on in the educational system. Haakons is concerned about what happens to Kristen in September. Pupils are assessed by the schools to determine if they are ready to proceed to the next level in the primary program. “If she is allowed to go on (in September), she will,’’ Haakons said, adding that funding would not be available for her daughter to start on a full-day program un- til January. “I'll be quite upset if she’s academically abie to go on with the other kids but is held back because of funding.”’ Suzanne Zacharias was told by her son’s teacher that he was ready to go on in the system.
