our past. And on top of
everything, there are two splendid
fire-trucks, fully armed, as well as
the old hose-reels that are the cen-
tre-piece of the annual tourney.

He’s shown his treasures to
streams of children, shown them
how they worked or were used.
It’s a wonderful way for them to
see the progressions made even in
their own time, certainly in their
parent’s, and dramatically during
. the lives of their grandparents. It's
been an easy way to show them
how we've modified our environ-
ment, how we've made life easier
physically so that we can make it
more demanding mentally.

Those visits have been cut
severely, to his real sorrow,
because of computer classes and
French immersion classes, and

safety classes and the rest of the
things we want to protect our
children with. Add to which the
recent steep rise in the price of
their transport.

That newly acquired computer
is going to make a massive space
difference in the archives office in
the basement at Presentation
House. Unfortunately, it is not
protected in any way by
sprinklers, except for the various
vaults, which hold masses of im-
portant paper but not any of the
artifacts.

And this man, Bill Baker,
“without whem’' as we say so
easily, is on the thin edge of
retirement. ‘“‘Thin edge’’ because
he'd planned to leave this fall, but
was persuaded to stay until what
looks like January-February. The
post is being widely advertised,
but it will take an exceptional
replacement to assume and carry

Well, as one artifact to another,
is there any way we seniors can
help? Can we be Friends of the
Past, or Friends of the Archives?

He has this lovely vision of a
properly safe, commodious build-
ing on property the city still owns
in the Quay area, with the whole
collection on display and the
trolley making a tourist circle up
to Third Street, maybe. The stur-
dy compressor is good for it. You
don't need a turn-around because
the thing is double-ended.

Why not? The Seniors’ Lottery
exists for helping a project of this
dimension as does the Vancouver
