In the City of New Westminster, there is a Japanese Friendship Garden near the City Hall. Included are 100 Yoshino cherry trees, a water lily pond and many native plants in this western interpretation of a classic Japa- nese garden. If you happen to fly to Van- couver, you’ll arrive at the city’s Sea Island Airport. If you rent a car there, you need go only a very short distance before seeing your first horticultural garden. It’s cailed Vander Zaim'’s Fantasy Gardens and is located just south of the airport on the Steveston Hwy. in the City of Richmond. Begun by aurseryman John Massot, it was redeveloped by nurseryman William Vander Zalm before he became premier of the province, This garden features The Conservatory and excellent seasonal outdoor displays. The restaurant features Sunday buffet brunches, and there is an admis- sion charge. Open daily. The Canadian Garden Council says the City of Vancouver (zone &b) boasts at least five major hor- ticultural garden sites. Of special interest are the plant- ings of native dogwoods, azaleas, flowering cherries and weeping hemlocks, to say nothing of the huge redwoods that dominate much of the park. There are also water lilies and many ~alking trails through and around this famous park. Overlooking the Strait of Georgia, part of the Pacific Ocean, is the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden. Here one finds a series of theme gardens, including the somewhat separate and distinct Nitobe Me- morial Garden which is the most authentic Japanese garden in North America. Created in 1960, this garden is one hectare (2.4 acres) in size and ‘‘brings to its viewers a timeless sense of the changing seasons and the harmony of the universe."” in spring its lake reflects the cherry biossoms; in autumn, the varied colors of the changing leaves. The main garden at UBC con- tains a man-made Alpine garden, a native plant garden, a [6th cen- tury formal herbal garden, an ar- bor and food garden and an Asian rarden set in a majestic stand of coastal forest trees. Here, in summer, one finds huge drifts of blue Himalayan poppies combined with beds of primulas. In the Chinatown section of Vancouver, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the first full-scale Suzhou-style garden ever constructed outside of China. It is the product of a unique long-term cooperative effort be- tween the people and governments of Canada and the People’s Republic of China. The garden was constructed between March 1985 and April 1986, by a 52-n.an team of experts from the City of Suzhou (near Shanghai), China, working under contract for the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society of Vancouver. The classical garden _ itself (which is adjacent to a larger, separate park of the same name) is just .14 hectare or “% of an acre. Greek novelist, Nikos Kazantzakis, once said, ‘‘there is no more beautiful sight in the world than a Chinese garden, one of the highest peaks of wisdom and sensitivity man has reached." Established in 1971, the Van- Dusen Botanical Display Garden is a horticulturalist's garden located on part of a former golf course. Operated by the city's parks and recreation board, this garden also has a garden informa- tion service, and a volunteer organization. Open daily with an admission charge. Near the VanDusen is an older one, the Quarry Garden, in Queen Elizabeth Park which attracts thousands of locals and tourists each week. Featured in the 20 hectare (50 acre) gardens are roses, perennials and unique plants which may only be grown in Canada here on the West Coast. in the same park is the Bloede] Conservatory, a triodetic dome containing hundreds of species of jungle and desert plants. There is no admission charge for the park or gardens but a small fee applies to the conser- vatory. Across the Lions Gate Bridge in North Vancouver is the Park and Tilford Gardens — a series of in- dividual gardens and a greenhouse on a one hectare property.
