JUDITH MARCUSE Dance Com-
pany returns to the stage for two
nights, Sept. 29 and 30, with a
new ballet called Distant City, a
tender, lyrical work by Toronto
choreographer Christopher House.

House’s innovative work is set to
the music of the late Quebec
choreographer Claude Vivies, Cinq
Chansons pour Percussion.

“ve been describing it to
people as a series of Haikus,” said
Judith Marcuse. “It’s a quiet
piece — there are lots of silences
in it. It’s the kind of piece you
want to slow your pulse down for
and let wash over you.”’

Marcuse says the dance was
created with individual dancers in
mind. “It fits them like good
clothes,”’ she said.

The evening program also in-
cludes the vibrant and humorous
Time Out, set to the music of West
African band Toure Kunda, and
Closed Circuit (1985), which por-
trays the reactions of five people
trapped by circumstances beyond
their control.

tn Blue Skies Purple Haze, au-
dience-goers get a different version
of the classic Jimi Hendrix song.
The piece has been rearranged for
a string quartet. The program is
rounded out with a lyrical ballet
composed of solos, duets, « trio
and an emsemble work, Bach and
Blue, which premiered last year.
