OPEN LETTER TO DOUG COLLINS: In response to your insulting, . Chauvinistic and bigoted column in this unfortunate dispute and that she, in her own way, has been our Nurses care about people OPEN LETTER TO. DOUG COLLINS: Nursing is not a privilege, it’s a Profession. It requires skill, courage, technical expertise, stamina, high principles, and heart. ; It is not for everybody. But it is still, at the bottom line, what runs any hos;ital. I consider it a privilege during my 21-year career to have worked with some extremely fine people. But this is my career, not my I am supporting my family with my job. I am not a seamstress, nor a cashier; I am a nurse. Until someone invents a seplacement for me, I am the best thing you’ve got in any hospital _- your care-giver, your listening- Post, your advocate — maybe even your lifeline. Value me. . Don't pay me lip-service. Pay me for beng. at the bedside at three on a Sunday morning. Don’t tell me I was aware of what nursing. involved before I . started. No one is prepared for the ; realities of nursing — the physical exhaustion, the emotional drain, the frustration of a death so vainiy someone else’s despair. There is no way to prepare for or to guard . - against these things. . -Oh yes, it can also be joyful — ° joys in small gains, a movement, a ‘breath, in 2 smile, a heartbeat, the squeeze of «a hand. These are sometimes the only reasons one stays and cadures. ~~! The legacy of nursing is one of which nurses are all familiar and justly proud. But this profession has evolved so much:since the days of Nightingale that it is ludicrous - fo compare what she was to what we are. ' But what we are would meet ‘with her approval { know. For we We care about. the peopie of this province. We have been talking health-care and issuing warning signals about its demise for years now. Nurses stand at the inside of the health-care system looking out. You wan:.the wuth about health . care in BC? Ask any one of us. . For we are its heart. Doug Collins, you seem ignorant of what we do. I am only grateful that the general public appears to be much better informed and ap- ‘preciative. . Gail Hampson, RN. During the development of her nursing school in the mid 1800s, it is known that Florence Nightingale removed all nursing services (in- cluding her own) from their place of work, until the doctors prom- ised they would no longer treat nurses as basic slave laborers and would help to improve their work- ing conditions. Times haven’t changed that much, have they? ‘+ Nurses remain very caring indi- viduals, humanitarians to be sure (no matter what you might think) or we would have never chosen this profession, nor would we remain in it. That ‘‘rotten old dirty dollar’? is an important part of nursing pres- ently, both to retain nurses in this province and to encourage indi- viduals to embark in this profes- sion. If we were to abandon nursing and choose to work in a super- market, sew, move to another country offering decent incentives or heaven forbid... marry a doc- tor, who would be left to care for your ailing family member, Mr. Collins, when the time comes? Cen you not look past the pres- ent and see what the future holds? Or is hospitalization and a decent standard of health care not your cup of tea? The public, ir general, appears to have a good perspective of our future concerns and the problems we now face (unlike you it seems), which is probably why they are giving their much needed support and will hopefully continue to do so. If we had to rely,on the likes of you to solve our ongoing problems in health care, there would not be a hospital in this province with its doors open for service. No nurses, no care to be given, no place to go. . Please Mr. Collins, give that “brain pan’’ (or is it “‘bed pan’’?) head of yours a good solid shake and see if you can understand the seriousness of this situation. L.
