Fa HO aR Er Nae sie RUGBY, GOLF, SOCCER High school sports swing into spring COMPETITION IN four North Shore high school spring sports — track and field, boys’ rugby and golf, girls’ soccer — are in full sw- ing this week. The senior boys’ rugby league appears to be a three-way battle between West Vancouver Highlanders, Argyle Pipers and Carson Graham Fagles for the North Shore title and a berth in the B.C. Championships May 25-27 in Victoria. Sentinel Spartans, Seycove Seyhawks and Elphinstone Cougars round out the six-team circuit. West Van, under coaches Brian Lynch, Mike Smith and Nick knocked off Elphinstone 50-0 and Argyle 9-6 in exhibition games prior to spring break before beating Semiahmoo of White Rock, one of the better Fraser Valley teams, 19-9. Argyle, coached by Peter Ther- rien, T.K. Kariya and Les Wilson, disposed of Sentinel 18-3 and lost to Burnaby North 7-6 before losing to West Van in their pre-season contests; then downed Seycove 17-7 in last week’s only league match. RORTH SHORE ATHLETES Students strike bowling medals CATHERINE HARDIE of Hillside played an outstanding game at the 2Ath annual jenior bowling tournament at Brunswick Lions Gate Lanes in West Vancouver, winning in four categories and capturing a medal for her 622 series. The 13 year old won the junior girls’ single category with 663 points, the junior girls’ all events with 2051 points and the all events scratch with 1673 points. Hardie and partner Jessica Harmon cf Collingwood school also won the junior doubles event with a total of 1386 points. Hardie will receive a 600 medal for her outstanding 622 series from the Young American Bowling Alliance at the junior bowling banquet, the date of which has not yet been set. Hardie, who has a 143 average, has bowled since she was six. At age 11, she won a bronze medal for the provincial bowling tournament. In last year’s provincial tournament Hardie captured a silver medal.
