SECURING THE HOME Alarms deter burglars WITH THE increasing frequency of home break-ins, more and more people are in the market for a home alarm system that will help deter burglars and thefts. But it is important to combine any alarm system with a number of easy common sense approaches to theft and crime prevention, say the North Vancouver RCMP. “T think that alarms should be used with other security measures,’’ explains North Van- couver RCMP Cst. Cliff Doherty. “Things like good, solid doors.’’ Bolts, chains, other door securi- ty devices and the door striker plates — those plates set into the door jamb — should all be secured with long screws that, if possible, go well through the door jamb deep into the surrounding wail. Securing these will help prevent a good strong kick from opening the door. Sliding doors can be especially vulnerable and the locks may not be adequate to keep out a deter- mined burglar. Special stops to keep the sliding doors from being lifted out of the track are a good, sound security measure for a home. Surrounding shrubs where pro- wlers could hide should be trimm- ed and kept under control, Doher- ty suggests. Would-be burglars are more easily spotted this way. Reducing the potential hiding places to a minimum will also reduce the chance of a burglar or prowler hiding out. Less cover means more risk for burglars. Keeping all valuables engraved with a driver’s licence number is a good way to deter burglars.
