rival THE NORTH Shore Argos ex- tended their undefeated record to 2-0 with a 30-28 win over the Ren- frew Trojans Aug. 17. The win gives the Argos four points and sole possession of first place in local junior tier II foot- ball. The North Shore squad jumped into an early 10-0 lead with a field goal by Scott LeSage. and a 66- yard punt return touchdown by Dave Boustos, who had scored an earlier 41-yard touchdown pass- and-run play that was whistled dcwn by the referee. But the Argos watched their ear- ly lead chewed up by strong Trojan ground game that ran up 21 points by half-time. North Shore came out for the second half, however, with a brilliant counter-attack that com- dined excellent running and pass- ing plays. , Star tailback Tommy Newman, who sat out the entire first-half, carried the ball 23 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The first came with Newman vaulting over from the three-yard Eine. Newman's second touchdown, from eight yards out, came after a well-executed 80-yard drive that had the Argos overpowering the Renfrew defense. . The Argos added to their com- eback with a 20-yard touchdown from Rob Lervold to receiver and special teams man Tony Vanderleelie. Ahead 30-21 the Argos went into | Trojans a ‘‘prevent”’ defense, allowing one more touchdown drive by Ren- frew. Argo’s special teams continued to shine with excellent punt and kick-off return teams anchored by Boustos and Vanderleelie, who col- lectively racked up over 255 yards in returns. The North Shore defense, led by nose-tackle Billy ‘‘Bad Boy’’ Cox, came up with a big second-half, sacking the Trojans quarterback J! times and holding their offence to a single touchdown. “Special teams are a big part of the game in Canadian football and our special teams were just ex- cellent today,"’ said Argos coach R.J. Parry. *‘They set the tempo and really fired up the rest of the team. We're very happy with our progress to this point and feel we can do some exciting things with the people we have on our special teams." “‘Our coaching staff made some great adjustments at half-time both offensively and defensively. We shut down their offence and ex- ploded with ours,’ said Argo quarterback Rob Lervold, who was 18 of 24 for 190 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
